🌟 ASAIN in Action in Melbourne! 🌟 Following the Australian Swiss Academic & Innovation Network launch in October, Arianna Oddo, PhD and many of her fantastic colleagues from the University of Melbourne welcomed ASAIN member Douglas Haggstrom for an exciting visit. This whirlwind tour sparked engaging discussions on potential collaborations, covering a variety of impactful topics: ✅ Insights into the incredible Medicines Development for Global Health with Mark Sullivan AO and Uni Melbourne ✅ Exploration of the dynamic Melbourne Connect innovation space ✅ Inspirational conversations with entrepreneurs Giuseppe M. J. Barca and Shelby Holland from Cymphony Bio ✅ Idea exchange on education, investments, inspiring academic entrepreneurs, the joy of KTT, and the opportunities bilateral funding can unlock with the Uni Melbourne business development team ✅ And as we were in Melbourne - a delightful Italian lunch on Lygon St, with the Genesis Fund team and discussions about venture building, growth support, and internationalization These conversations highlighted significant opportunities for overlap and engagement with th Innovation Office University of Basel and Uni Melbourne. One of ASAIN’s key inspirations is fostering partnerships to translate Australia’s outstanding inventions through collaboration with Switzerland. This was a brief taster that showed it was possible and we are excited to work toward making this vision a reality in 2025! 🎉 Stay connected: Sign up for the ASAIN newsletter and check out details about our next event—link in the comments. • 🚀Tackling Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR): SPEARHEAD’s Success Stories 🌍 Over the past three years, SPEARHEAD has been at the forefront of innovation, collaboration, and education to combat one of the most pressing global health challenges: AMR. The project has one more year to go but, here’s how we have made an impact so far: 🔹 Real-Time Monitoring System We introduced DrugAlert, a real-time alert system integrated into clinical workflows at University Hospital Basel for timely interventions and optimized antibiotic prescriptions that enhance patient care and antibiotic stewardship. 🔹 AI-Driven Risk Prediction and Rapid Diagnostics With nanomotion antibiotic susceptibility test (AST), we reduced diagnostic times from 37 hours to 4.4 hours, with ongoing efforts to further cut this to 2 hours. Additionally, we have established a federated learning framework to develop a robust risk prediction model for resistant bacteria. 🔹 Innovative Citizen Engagement We have been bridging science and society with hands-on workshops and creative outreach. Empowering the public through creative events like the OpenHealth Datathon and DiPLab workshops, we brought together students, designers, scientists, clinicians and innovators to tackle AMR through collaboration and education. A targeted social media campaign reached over 1,000 participants with a 254% boost in engagement. 🔹 Health-Economic Insights Quantifying the labor market impact of UTIs and evaluating the cost-effectiveness of rapid diagnostics, we provide decision-makers with critical evidence to scale AMR solutions for broader societal and economic benefit. Let's continue to break down silos and collaborate across public health, hospitals, design, data and innovation. 👏 A huge thank you to our incredible partners for driving change! 👉 Join our repository: https://lnkd.in/e_XZe5i3 #Innovation #AMR #Healthcare #AI #Diagnostics #Sustainability #Collaboration Saara Malkamäki Hailey Kim Christoph Meier Cornelia Schneider Dr. Lina Khoury Aerts Julia Bielicki Daniele Malpetti Gilbert Greub Alexandre Delfino Ginevra Terenghi Serena Cangiano Mark J. • 🎄 Planning for the future at Swiss Leading House Africa 🎄   It is that time of the year when the selfies move inside and in front of the Christmas tree!   We were honored to host Anneline Morgan, Chief Director of the DSTI in South Africa, at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute with Kobina Assan Ampah Jürg Utzinger for an inspiring discussion on fostering partnerships between Switzerland and South Africa including with the Swiss Leading House Africa program.   The Leading House programs provide a platform for young researchers and startups to embark on a collaborative journey of innovation—from Switzerland to the world.   Martin Röösli and his team that form part of the Joint South Africa and Swiss Chair in Global Environmental Health showed the value of long term collaboration. They have built upon the chair with SNF projects, Government Excellence PhDs and Leading House projects to make a lasting impact. Read more here - https://lnkd.in/eBDjrh7g and stay tuned for more!   The ability to intelligently combine existing instruments and opportunities is key to create lasting impact like the group from Martin and his collaborators in South Africa. Together with the DSTI and other actors across Africa we look forward to working to create more opportunities and making sure opportunities are complementary and team switzerland works together!   A special thank you to Jacquelene Friedenthal and Kgomotso Austin for facilitating high-value connections in Switzerland. We look forward to continuing these conversations and hearing how we can turn ideas from the visit into action. Douglas Haggstrom   Here’s to more impactful collaborations in 2025! 💡🌍   #Collaboration #Innovation #Research #LeadingHouseAfrica #GlobalHealth
