Growing up in rural Kenya, Esther Nzau dreamed of becoming an engineer, despite being one of only seven girls in her primary school class. Later, in engineering school, she was one of just two women in a class dominated by men. “The ratio was insane,” she recalls, fearing her fellow female student might drop out. Globally, there are more men than women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. Despite some progress, gender disparity remains significant, particularly in areas like engineering and technology. etech caught up with engineers Esther Nzau and Celestine Atieno to learn how they are driving change and making a difference in their communities. "Standards encompass such a broad range of topics that no one person can identify all the ways that gender might impact them. If we want standards to be gender responsive, I think the most important thing we can do is ask questions. We also need to be willing to challenge the answers we receive and ask follow-up questions. What is the evidence that is provided? How robust is the finding? Is the source reputable?" etech recently spoke with Michelle Parkouda, Manager of Research at the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) and Co-convenor of the ISO/IEC Joint Advisory Group on Gender Responsive Standards (GRS). How digital health is shaping the future of medical standards. etech caught up with Regina Geierhofer, the Secretary of the IEC Technical Committee (TC) which prepares standards for medical equipment. Regina shares insights on how digital health has fundamentally changed the approach of experts in her TC. “We have always written safety standards mainly with users who were in the medical profession in mind. Doctors, nurses, surgeons – they were the ones who use the equipment and do that safely. But with the advent of digital health, patients have more control over their health; they can for instance monitor it with wearables from wherever they are. That means we now should write standards while considering a growing user group, the patients.” Read the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/eQ8cXJvM #IECSafety #IECStandards #IECEtech #DigitalHealth #MedicalAI #EmergingTech #Innovation #IECforSDGs

Shining a light on team talent! Meet Vanesha R., our talented Brand Specialist at the IEC. When she’s not shaping the IEC brand, she’s crafting stunning works of art from paper in her spare time! Fun fact: Paper cutting dates back over 2,000 years, originating in Asia with early forms made from animal hides. After the invention of papermaking in China, it flourished, featuring prominently in shadow puppet shows and later spreading to Europe via the Silk Road and even becoming a favourite winter pastime. #IECPeople #TeamTalent #PaperCutting #ArtHistory #CulturalHeritage #TraditionalArt #Creativity
