🎄✨ What a magical evening! Last Friday, the Executive MBA University of Zurich Alumni Association of the University of Zurich was thrilled to host over 110 alumni for our annual Christmas dinner at the delightful James Joyce restaurant in Zurich. The atmosphere was buzzing with joy, laughter, engaging conversations, and of course, fantastic food! It was wonderful to welcome so many of our esteemed alumni, particularly our current EMBA classes of 2023-2025 and 2024-2026, who joined us as special guests. Seeing everyone reconnect and forge new relationships throughout the evening was truly inspiring. In his brief remarks, President Sandro Tschuor emphasized the Alumni Association's core mission: to provide opportunities for reflection, dialogue, and learning to help members navigate today's complex landscape. He highlighted the immense value of the alumni network as a peer group, especially during uncertain times, offering support and fostering individual growth. Year-end plea - please read if you are hesitating to decide for your next development step! 🚀🚀🚀 As many of you are aware, I commenced my Executive MBA studies back in September this year. Some weeks into taking the decision back in May, catching up with contacts in my network, I stopped counting the iterations of the most frequent comment/feedback: “Wow, I wouldn’t dare to go back to school/university and face all the learning efforts again” Has it been easy to tackle one module after the next, at an incredible pace, covering the wide spectrum of all the courses on the agenda to date? No! Would I make the same decision again? Absolutely, yeah! Why is that: ➡️ UZH experience: Amazing lecturers, highly diversified student cohorts, international use cases and locally embedded. ➡️ Networking: Participants have a background spanning across many industries and functions, providing a sea of opportunities to connect and learn. ➡️ Collaboration and Support: The cohorts I ammpart of are giving me a personally unprecedented experience in terms of support, motivation and positive vibes 🙏 ➡️ Learning: Modules completed to date covered highly relevant and practical subjects e.g. Leadership, Digital Markets, Accounting, Data Analysis, Statistics, Peer-to-peer feedback, Personal Branding (non-exhaustive). 💡Conclusion: If you’re hesitating to take the next development step in your career, please do not let anyone or anything stop you. You are the master of your own career 💪💪💪 #UZH #EMBA #selfdevelopment #believeinyourself #togetherwearestronger #careermanagement #moretocome

Last week our annual “Best of EMBA UZH” Refresher took place and EMBA Alumni and Alumnae from many graduating classes joined the event to learn about cutting edge research from two of our EMBA lecturers – Prof. David Oesch and Prof. Sven Henkel. Sven`s exploration of hyper-personalized advertising reveals the fine line between relevance and discomfort, while David's analysis of the Benko/Signa Group crash highlights the critical importance of financial health and the impact of macroeconomic factors. Thought-provoking lessons in both marketing and financial analysis and a fantastic opportunity to meet again and network with the alumni community!
Great catching up with fellow Executive MBA University of Zurich alumni at a fascinating refresher event in the Uni Tower! Jürgen Brücker CEO of the University of Zurich executive education gave a little insight on the new vision until 2030. The presentations following were insightful and thought-provoking. Sven Henkel's talk on the possibilities and ongoing research around hyper-personalized advertising was very interesting. Research shows, that we do want to see hyper-personlized ads in some domains and environments, but not so much in others, because it gets kind of creepy. Equally compelling was David Oesch's analysis of the Benko/Signa Group crash. His demonstration of how the warning signs were evident in the financial statements of some of the group's companies was a powerful lesson in financial analysis. Lack of equity or lack of liquidity kills companies. Some major events like rising interest rates, inflation, and wars occurring simultaneously brought down a company that had roughly 5 billion in assets on its balance sheet... And of course the good conversations after the lectures are always super valuable for me. Many thanks to Anna-Barbara Schlüer and Dr. Matthias Schaub for organizing this great event! 🌟 An Unforgettable Week of Innovation: EMBA UZH in Helsinki! 🌟 Last week, our cohort embarked on an extraordinary journey to Helsinki, Finland—the Nordic epicenter of innovation, sustainability, cutting-edge technology, and happiness! Despite having a population smaller than New York City, Finland has produced an impressive array of multinational companies. 🎓 Day 1: A Bold Start We kicked off at Hanken School of Economics with the Sustainable Innovation Workshop led by the brilliant Orren Shalit. Tackling climate-neutral strategies, we uncovered how innovation drives real-world impact—and it's anything but "business as usual!" The day ended with a VIP tour at Finland's renowned Wärtsilä, a global leader in innovative technologies for marine and energy markets, and a warm reception at the Embassy of Switzerland in Finland. 💡 Day 2: Tech and Transformation AI and Digital Transformation for Executives with Rihards Garančs was an eye-opening session on how technology is revolutionizing industries. The key takeaways? Game-changing strategies to shape the future of business! Following the lecture, we visited VTT to dive into the fascinating world of quantum computing. 🚀 Day 3 Immersing in Innovation We had the privilege of attending a compelling session with Dr. Kjell A Nordström on the topic of World in Momentum. His insights on navigating rapid change, leveraging tacit knowledge, and crafting powerful narratives were both eye-opening and empowering. Anton Angerer, Digital Portfolio Manager at Hitachi Energy, shared his thoughts on Dr. Nordström’s session: “Dr. Kjell A. Nordström’s lecture brilliantly explained our evolving world through supply and demand, highlighting AI and generative AI as transformative General Purpose Technologies. His insights on how these innovations disrupt Technology, Institutions, and Values were invaluable, especially for driving change in the energy sector. His clarity and vision make him an exceptional fit for executive education—it was a privilege to learn from him!” 🌍 Day 4: Slush Magic At Slush, Europe’s premier startup event, we were wowed by thought-provoking sessions, including fireside chats with legends like Ilkka Paananen (Supercell) and Javier Olivan (Meta). 📖 Day 5: Wrapping Up with Vision & ✨ Beyond the Classroom The week concluded with a deep dive into Service Revolution: X-as-a-Service by Pekka Helle. Tara Hesse, COO & General Counsel at responsAbility Investments AG: “Highlights for me included @Orren Shalit’s lecture on sustainable innovation, showing that innovation isn’t magic but a focused, structured process. The Slush conference was another standout, bringing together countless innovative start-ups and offering lessons from founders on scaling while preserving culture.” Which inspiring innovation hubs have you visited? A visit to Nokia's headquarters was a fitting close to an EMBA week in Helsinki whose focus was innovation and transformation. In executive education, Nokia often comes up as a negative example, the company that fell from global dominance in mobile phones and missed the wave of smartphones. We discovered that this is only part of the story, and that Nokia has bounced back as a leading company in mobile and wired networks. Its patent portfolio counts a mind-blowing 20'000+ families, including 6'500+ that are deemed essential for the implementation of standards. A memorable example of creativity is the use of network equipment as sensors, for example to infer occupation levels and patterns in buildings. Very grateful to Mikko A. Uusitalo, the lead of the Finland site for Nokia Bell Labs and coordinator of the European flagship project for 6G, Hexa-X-II, for this opportunity and his generous insights.
