🔗 Newsartikel: https://lnkd.in/e5vtvpP9 🔗Ergebnisse in der Zeitschrift «Industrial Ecology»: https://lnkd.in/e2jg2X3M 🔗Webseite SCENE: https://lnkd.in/eRvuxKMk Technology and Society Laboratory Nadia Malinverno Claudia Som simon buschor Kealie Vogel Schwarze Francis Bernd Nowack Gustav Nyström #Kaskadennutzung #Kreislaufwirtschaft

Mining the Atmosphere research at Empa – Part 2 on #Conversion The following innovative projects are transforming how we capture and utilize CO2 and methane to support sustainable industrial #decarbonization. Together, these efforts are advancing scalable solutions for atmospheric CO2 utilization. 🔹🔹 Plasma-based CO2 conversion – PLASMA🔹🔹 The Plasma Applications for Sustainably Mining the Atmosphere (PLASMA) project aims to harness the power of lightning-inspired innovation for a carbon-neutral world. It employs plasmas and renewable energy to upcycle the two primary greenhouse gases, CO2 and CH4, into the raw material of the future. To achieve this goal, the team is establishing a combined experimental and numerical platform at Empa to explore the effects of high pressure and temperature on plasma-driven reactions. Its unique qualities as a Power-to-X technology make plasma processing a promising method to decarbonize energy-intensive industrial processes while creating sustainable products from greenhouse gases. 🔹🔹Electricity-based conversion of gaseous CO2 to solid carbon - CO2SOL🔹🔹 This project focuses on direct electrochemical conversion of gaseous CO2 into solid carbonaceous materials, which can then be used as additives to concrete and other construction materials, yielding a carbon negative process. This conversion will be implemented for the first time in gas diffusion electrodes. The activity, selectivity, and stability of the tailored electrodes will be investigated as a function of key reaction parameters to understand their function, and to find optimal operating conditions to jump-start the mining activities on the atmosphere. 🔹🔹Novel catalysts for CO2 reduction – ENHANCE🔹🔹 The project aims to exploit the disorder of amorphous materials to develop more sustainable and cost-effective catalysts for CO2 reduction, without resorting to transitional elements. We investigate the role of surface defects and assess how their catalytic properties depend on their nature and arrangement, which are influenced by embedded network breakers and formers. We establish a framework to digitally accelerate the design of sustainable amorphous catalysts by integrating computational and analytical methods. Mining the Atmosphere – a research focal point at Empa to offer solutions to turn from a CO2-emitting into a CO2-binding society. How will we contribute to this vision? The concept is this: 🔹To extract CO2 from the atmosphere 🔹To convert CO2 into valuable carbon-containing materials and chemicals 🔹At the end of their life cycle, these materials/chemicals are transferred to valuable products, e.g. to sinks where the carbon is stored for centuries This year, more than 10 projects at Empa, which complement those already ongoing, have been initiated on carbon capture, conversion, use and systemic development. With our industry-centric approach we are motivated to create impact for Switzerland and beyond. Examples of high industry-relevance will be showcased in the NEST unit Beyond Zero with partners Implenia, Federal Office for Buildings and Logistics FOBL and OOS AG. In this post series, I invite you to get a general insight into the research efforts that will challenge us for the coming years. 🔹Part 1: Capture: We aim to advance carbon capture by means of novel extraction and capturing processes to efficiently remove CO2 from the atmosphere 🔹🔹CO2 capture from water by novel anion exchange membranes (AEM) – CO2AM🔹🔹 This project aims to further develop the CO2 extraction from water by membrane electrodialysis. A prototype will be built, which is designed to use river water with a weakly alkaline pH, first with commercial membranes and then with novel membranes developed in the project. 🔹🔹Material development for Direct Air Capture (DAC)🔹🔹 For adsorbent material developments for CO2 capture we use models that make virtual prototyping possible as early as possible. This allows a better understanding of how to further optimize our materials (CO2/H2O mass transport, heat transport, capacity) and the co-optimization of processes, components and materials together with our partners. Current promising materials developments concern amorphous CO2 adsorbers and composite materials with metal-organic frameworks (MOF). 🔹🔹Efficient structured contactors for DAC – ESCoDAC🔹🔹 ESCoDAC intends to develop concepts for a novel mass-producible structured sorption contactor for Direct Air Capture (DAC) with an operation and regeneration process tailored to the sorbent. The project aims to increase the efficiency and yield of the DAC process by engineering the materials and processes in a multiscale approach (local flow and diffusion conditions during ad- and desorption, advanced desorption strategies and process scheduling).
