By applying new technologies and advanced materials such as composites and shape memory alloys, we develop in collaboration with national and international universities, research institutes and industrial partners new solutions in the fields of structural strengthening, timber structures and structural dynamics with the goal to improve the safety, serviceability and durability of civil structures. The introduction and implementation of the new solutions in practice is promoted by collaboration with industry partners, teaching at universities and knowledge transfer in symposia. Within our core competencies, we also provide the industry with high level services. The laboratory is equipped with a large testing hall and several unique testing machines, has skilled personnel with a vast experience in performing large scale static and dynamic laboratory and field tests and holds an ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation for static and fatigue tests. It is the only accredited laboratory for large scale tests in Switzerland.

Ein eindrückliches Experiment wird gerade an der Empa in #Dübendorf aufgebaut: Das Herzstück? Der sogenannte «Shaker». Der mixt zwar keine Cocktails, versetzt aber ein #Tragwerksmodell in Schwingungen, wie sie bei Erdbeben auftreten können. Am Modell zeigen die Empa-Bauingenieure René Steiger, Pedro Palma und Robert Widmann von der Forschungsabteilung «Ingenieurstrukturen», wie die Gewichts- und Steifigkeitsverteilung im Tragwerk dessen Schwingungsverhalten beeinflussen. Der Hintergrund zu dieser Demonstration? Häuser aus #Holz – vor allem mehrstöckige – werden in der Schweiz immer beliebter. Um ihre Stabilität zu gewährleisten, müssen genügend Aussteifungen im Tragwerk vorhanden sein. Die Grundlagen hierzu liefern Computerberechnungen. Um diese in der Praxis zu überprüfen und die Computermodelle zu verbessern, nutzen Empa-Forschende den zwei Tonnen schweren «Shaker». 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eXBsSD58 🗓️Übrigens: der «Shaker» kann am Samstag, 14. This year the Department of Civil Engineering at Università degli Studi di Salerno (Italy) is co-organizing with the Empa Structural Engineering Research Laboratory the 7th #SMAR2024 International Conference on Smart Monitoring, Assessment, and Rehabilitation of Civil Structures from September 4-6, 2024. 🔗 Conference website: https://www.smar2024.org/ The conference opened with a welcome address by Gianvittorio Rizzano, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Salerno, and by Tanja Zimmermann, Director of Empa. Tanja Zimmermann presented the role of Empa's cutting-edge material and technology research in the #builtenvironment sector, along with its emphasis on meeting the requirements of industry and the needs of society. Careful use of #naturalresources and thinking in terms of #closedcycles are the focus of Empa's research today. With the research initiative "Mining the Atmosphere," at Empa we aim to remove excess #CO2 from the atmosphere and support the transition from a CO2-emitting society to a CO2-binding one. The goal is to develop carbon-based materials and utilize carbon captured from the atmosphere as a raw material for the future. The #constructionsector plays a key role, as concrete and other building materials could bind enormous amounts of atmospheric carbon due to their mass. This emphasizes the growing importance of this conference in the current global context. A special thank you also goes to the organizers of the event: Prof. Enzo Martinelli (University of Salerno), Prof. Alper Ilki (Istanbul Technical University), Prof. Moslem Shahverdi and Prof. Masoud Motavalli (Empa). Empa, represented by the Research Laboratory for Structural Engineering and the Laboratory for Mechanical Systems Engineering, is actively involved with about 20 presentations on topics such as monitoring technologies, structural assessment and the application of advanced materials for structural rehabilitation.
