About us
The Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights) is Zimbabwe’s biggest grassroots movement of ordinary people for human rights. Formed in 1992, ZimRights main focus of work is empowering ordinary people and communities with knowledge and tools for effective participation in the protection and promotion of human rights. For the past 27 years, ZimRights has empowered communities through civic education, legal aid support, psycho-social support and community advocacy strategies to ensure the realisation of basic rights especially for the most marginalised communities. In this process, ZimRights membership has increased to over 225 000 individual members equipped and empowered to claim their rights. ZimRights is registered as a Private Voluntary Organisation under Zimbabwe’s Private Voluntary Organisations Act. ZimRights operates fours regional offices in Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare and Masvingo. The Head Office is in Harare.

2024 Zimbabwe State of Civic Space Report Launch We are live for the launch of the 2024 Zimbabwe State of Civic Space Report, developed by Zimbabwe Human Rights Association in partnership with the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders (OMCT & FIDH). The report provides an in-depth analysis of the shrinking civic space in Zimbabwe, shedding light on the challenges faced by Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Human Rights Defenders (HRDs). For years, concerns about a shrinking civic space have echoed across the globe, and Zimbabwe is no exception. These concerns have intensified with the re-emergence of the PVO Amendment Bill, which has further threatened the operational freedom of CSOs and HRDs in the country. Key Findings from the Report: Only 16.4% of surveyed CSOs are registered under the PVO Act; 83.6% could be deemed unlawful if the Bill becomes law. A large majority of CSOs report their operating space as obstructed, repressed, or narrow. 92% of CSOs believe the PVO Bill will have a negative impact on their operations, particularly in terms of state surveillance, legal obstacles, and the potential withdrawal of funding from international partners. The report calls for collective action to protect civic space and ensure the sustainability of civil society in Zimbabwe. We also highlight the importance of collaborative dialogue between government, CSOs, and international experts to build a more inclusive regulatory environment. Recommendations: Abandon the PVO Bill and avoid its signing into law. Establish an inclusive Civic Space Roundtable with all stakeholders. Ensure adequate support for marginalized groups seeking to comply with the Bill, if passed. Strengthen support for Human Rights Defenders and ensure justice for victims of violations. Please join us for the live launch and discussion of the 2024 Zimbabwe State of Civic Space Report and contribute your thoughts as we reflect on the challenges ahead and the path forward.
