The 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) has officially ended. Over two weeks, several critical texts were adopted, the most notable being the decision on the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG), which sets out to triple climate action financing for developing countries by 2035. Another significant breakthrough at the conference was the agreement on the transparent operation of voluntary market mechanisms under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The approved texts provide clear guidance for the transparent operation of market-based exchanges of carbon savings and carbon sequestration contributions, including those derived from ecosystem restoration and nature-based solutions. A landmark decision was also reached on the Global Adaptation Goal, establishing thematic targets to be achieved by 2030. These include seven specific areas: water, health, biodiversity, food, infrastructure, poverty, and cultural and historical heritage. Additionally, four targets address the climate change adaptation cycle: risk and vulnerability assessments, adaptation planning, implementation and monitoring, and performance evaluation. For Bulgaria, COP29 will be remembered for its constructive participation in the challenging negotiation processes, the strengthening of regional collaborations with Southeast European partners on climate change and energy transition, and the successful hosting of high-level events in the Bulgarian pavilion. Looking ahead, the annual COP30 conference in 2025 will take place in Belem, Brazil, while Turkey and Australia are vying to host COP31. Deputy Minister of Environment and Water Reneta Koleva participated in the tenth edition of the "Voice It" youth forum "Young People, Environment and Climate Change", organized by UNICEF BULGARIA and Национална мрежа за децата / National Network for Children. "Children are not only victims of climate change - they are agents of change. Children and young people are at the forefront of global climate initiatives and their views must be taken into account in the policies that shape their future. A comprehensive and coherent policy to develop knowledge, skills and values that promote engagement with environmental issues and their solutions is needed to create an environmentally conscious attitude. It is imperative that this policy is implemented from the earliest childhood and school age," she said. 👉🏼 Deputy Minister Koleva recalled the fact that every day around 20 000 children are displaced worldwide due to climate-related disasters. Children born today will experience extreme weather events four times more often in a 1.5°C scenario and five times more in a 3°C global warming scenario above pre-industrial levels. ❗️ That is why it is important not to postpone or pass on the problems to future generations, but to be agents of change today. #MinistryOfEnvironmentAndWater #UNICEFBulgaria #children #ClimateChange #environment #youth

On Monday, the second decisive week of the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) began in Baku. This year, participants are tasked with addressing several key objectives: 1️⃣ Reaching an agreement on the so-called New Collective Quantified Financial Goal. This new target aims to build upon the previous commitment to mobilize $100 billion annually for mitigation and adaptation efforts in developing countries. 2️⃣ Reaffirming commitments and advancing negotiations on mitigation and a just energy transition, as pledged during COP28 in Dubai last year. 3️⃣ Establishing a mechanism for voluntary cooperation among countries (Article 6 of the Paris Agreement) to enable effective emissions reductions through quota transfers and nature-based solutions. This week is expected to bring critical high-level decisions that will shape the next steps toward achieving climate neutrality. 🌍 🇧🇬 The Bulgarian delegation, led by Svetlana Zhekova, is playing an active role in the negotiations, advocating for ambitious and balanced solutions to benefit the global climate.
