Last month, our team had the privilege of joining #PLEASe2024, an exceptional pan-African legal conference that truly embodied the spirit of collaboration and innovation. With over 110 legal professionals from 25 countries converging in Nairobi, Kenya, the energy was nothing short of electric! Our Senior Partner, David Mpanga represented AF Mpanga Advocates at this year's event, which explored the compelling theme of "Clients, People, Practice." The discussions were rich and forward-looking, diving deep into critical topics like: → Strategic responses to global shifts → Sustainability and transition finance → Evolving law firm-client relationships → Innovative business development → Building meaningful organizational cultures Beyond the formal sessions, the conference was a vibrant networking platform that strengthened existing relationships and sparked exciting new connections. It was a powerful reminder of how diverse perspectives can drive meaningful change in our profession. A heartfelt thank you to the organizers, Slaughter and May, and all the participants who made this event so memorable. Here's to continued collaboration and pushing the boundaries of legal practice across Africa! #AfricanLegalPractice #LegalConference #ProfessionalDevelopment

We’re proud to see Uganda featured in Debevoise’s Africa Update to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). Our courts are proving that businesses can grow sustainably while respecting human rights. This isn’t just a legal milestone—it’s a step toward a future where business works for everyone. We had the privilege of reviewing these findings, and we’re excited to share how Uganda is paving the way for responsible business in Africa. Thanks to Senior Attorneys Derrick Kuteesa, Yusuf Mawanda, and Candidate Attorney Mulindwa Fredrick -LLB (Hons) MAK. Take a moment to delve into what this means for businesses and communities: https://lnkd.in/eCcp2hYH

On Monday, we joined forces with Slaughter and May to deliver an intensive training session on Sovereign Loan Documentation for the Bank of Uganda legal team, State Attorneys, and Government Lawyers at Four Points by Sheraton Kampala. Led by Kathrine Meloni (Head of Treasury Insight at Slaughter and May) and Robert Byk, we covered crucial ground in cross-border financing, ESG considerations, and investment-grade agreements. Their wealth of experience in cross-border financing brought valuable insights to our developing markets context. The highlight? Watching over 20 senior legal minds engage deeply with modern lending practices, from LMA templates to credit insurance mechanisms. The enthusiasm in the room was electric! Thanks to the Bank of Uganda, and the Ministry of Justice & Constitutional Affairs Uganda for making this happen. This is just the start - there are more exciting sessions to come! #InternationalFinance #LegalTraining #SovereignDebt #Banking #Uganda #AFMpanga

We had the privilege of being part of a transformative session on Sovereign Loan Documentation yesterday at Four Points by Sheraton Kampala. Together with our colleagues from Slaughter and May, we engaged with an exceptional group of legal minds from the Bank of Uganda, State Attorneys, and Government Lawyers. Kathrine Meloni, Head of Treasury Insight at Slaughter and May, and Robert Byk led us through the intricacies of cross-border financing, sharing insights that only decades of hands-on experience can provide. What stood out most was our deep dive into the practical aspects of sovereign lending. We explored everything from the extensive LMA template framework to the nuanced world of investment-grade agreements – particularly relevant to our developing markets context. The room came alive during discussions on compliance frameworks and ESG considerations. It was refreshing to see how sustainability has evolved from a peripheral concern to a central focus in modern lending practices, alongside traditional priorities like credit monitoring and risk management. Kathrine's insights on credit insurance and protection mechanisms were particularly enlightening, especially regarding the shift toward more direct reinsurer access. Robert's expertise shone through as he unpacked the complexities of transfers and assignments under LMA standards. With over 20 engaged participants, this session marks just the beginning of our knowledge-sharing journey. Our sincere thanks to our hosts at Four Points by Sheraton Kampala, the engaged team from the Bank of Uganda, and our colleagues at the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Uganda for making this possible. Looking forward to building on these foundations in our upcoming sessions. #InternationalFinance #LegalTraining #SovereignDebt #FinancialLaw #Banking #Uganda

Our team at AF Mpanga Advocates successfully represented the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) in a landmark case that brings crucial clarity to employee vs consultant classification for tax purposes. Key takeaways from the High Court's ruling: - Fixed payments alone don't establish employment relationships - Consultants' status should be evaluated based on role permanency, payment structure, and control factors - Tax laws require holistic interpretation aligned with legislative intent This ruling provides much-needed guidance for organisations engaging consultants while ensuring proper tax compliance. Proud to have contributed to this significant development in Uganda's tax jurisprudence. #UgandaLaw #TaxLaw #LegalUpdate #EmploymentLaw #AFMpanga
