Cultural habits such as late-night suppers and social activities further delay bedtime, making it harder to wind down after a long day. Work culture also plays a significant role. The high expectations and demanding nature of many jobs in Singapore lead to extended working hours and the pressure to stay connected even after work hours. This often results in less time for relaxation and sleep. Moreover, the widespread use of electronic devices before bed can interfere with our body's natural sleep signals, making it difficult to fall asleep. Interestingly, the preference for air-conditioned spaces in our tropical climate can also affect sleep. While air conditioning helps to cool down, the dry air it creates might not be conducive for a good night's rest. Furthermore, the social emphasis on productivity and achievement can sometimes overshadow the importance of rest and recovery. As our city continues to advance, it's crucial to balance technological and economic progress with health and well-being. Historically, keeping cats in Housing Development Board (HDB) flats was legally not permitted due to concerns about hygiene, noise, and stray management. However, times are changing, and so are the policies. Starting September 1, 2024, the Cat Licensing Scheme will revolutionize how we integrate our feline friends into urban living spaces, promoting responsible pet ownership and fostering community harmony. What does this mean for you and your furry companions? The new scheme mandates that all cat owners, whether living in HDB flats, private condominiums, or private properties, must license their pets. Initially, there will be no fees, encouraging early compliance and easing the transition. The goal is to ensure all cats are vaccinated, microchipped, and accounted for, which enhances traceability during disease outbreaks and supports public health. Moreover, there are significant benefits like the Pet Cat Sterilization Support Programme, offering free sterilization and microchipping services to encourage responsible pet care. Why is this a game-changer for cat owners in Singapore? This initiative isn't just about regulation; it's about creating a more compassionate and orderly environment.   • Why is Singapore breaking temperature records this summer?     As someone who loves Singapore's blend of urban sophistication and lush greenery, the rising temperatures this vibrant city is experiencing feel deeply personal and concerning. This summer's heat isn't just uncomfortable; it's a stark reminder of the urgent realities of global warming and climate change. Singapore's temperatures have been steadily climbing over the past decade, setting new records each year. This isn't just a local issue—it's part of a broader global trend driven by increasing greenhouse gas emissions. In a small, urbanized city-state like Singapore, these emissions contribute to the urban heat island effect, where city temperatures soar higher due to human activities and dense infrastructure.     The rising heat impacts everyone, affecting both infrastructure and personal health. The increased UV index poses serious risks, like sunburns and a heightened risk of skin cancer. Heat-related illnesses, like heat exhaustion and heat stroke, are also a growing concern. High nighttime temperatures disrupt sleep, leading to daytime drowsiness and decreased productivity. Vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and children, are particularly at risk.
