Last month's Women in Financial Markets dialogue had us reflecting on female founders charting bold paths - which brought to mind this story from the Monk's Hill Ventures 10th Anniversary archives. Smart city solutions have traditionally served wealthy urban centers, but when Cha-Ly K. founded URBANMETRY, her vision was to leverage AI to democratize urban intelligence - making data-driven city planning accessible to emerging markets across Southeast Asia. By collecting and integrating unstructured data and transforming it into actionable insights, URBANMETRY is helping level the playing field. They now influence US$8-10 billion worth of construction projects annually, serving governments, planners, developers, and financial institutions across Southeast Asia. Such journeys remind us how vision, combined with disciplined execution, creates lasting impact. We recently hosted another SEAConnect session in Singapore in partnership with INSEAD, exploring Southeast Asia's vibrant startup and venture capital ecosystem. Our Investment Manager, Maansi Vohra, shared her perspective on transitioning from entrepreneur to investor, sparking thoughtful questions from students about the evolving landscape. Jia Jih Chai, Co-Founder and CEO of Rainforest, took us through his journey from software engineering to consulting, before finding his passion in entrepreneurship and angel investing.
