About us

The Institute of Mental Health (IMH) is a 2,000-bed acute tertiary psychiatric hospital situated on a 23-hectare campus at Buangkok Green Medical Park. Set amidst serene surroundings, IMH offers a comprehensive range of psychiatric, rehabilitative and counselling services for children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly. IMH’s tradition of care started in 1928. We were the first mental hospital in Singapore, starting with some 1,000 patients. Since then, many advances have been made in treatment, training, and research. Our treatment integrates evidence-based therapies, supported by the departments of clinical psychology, nursing, occupational therapy, and medical social work, to provide holistic care for our patients. IMH is equipped with modern facilities, with 50 wards for inpatients and seven Specialist Outpatient Clinics. IMH also plays a key role in training the next generation of mental health professionals in Singapore. We train psychiatrists and mental health professionals through the NHG-AHPL Residency Programme for psychiatry and through collaborations with the local tertiary institutions.

  • While we tend to say things in jest, it’s important to be mindful when using terms like "addiction" for activities like shopping and eating, especially in the presence of individuals in recovery, as it can unintentionally stigmatise or trigger negative emotions. The truth is, the three most common behavioural addictions—gambling addiction, gaming disorder, and compulsive sexual behavior disorder—can significantly affect a person’s life and well-being. Family support is key in breaking stigma associated with addiction and empowering individuals on their recovery journey. In our latest article adapted from the transcript of season 2, episode 3 of our podcast Mindful Dialogues “From Addiction to Advocacy” with guest Ranjit Singh, a counsellor at the National Addictions Management Service, and Dr Tchern Kuang Lambert Low, Chief of Addiction Medicine Department at IMH, we share practical tips and compassionate strategies to guide these conversations. • 🌱 Taking the first step toward therapy can feel daunting, especially when you’re unsure what to expect. Therapy is about growth and independence, not lifelong reliance. Whether you’re seeking support for life’s challenges or exploring ways to grow, therapy equips individuals with the tools to navigate challenges, build resilience, and foster meaningful connections. 💙 In our latest article adapted from the transcript of season 2, episode 2 of our podcast Mindful Dialogues “Psychotherapy For First-timers” with guest Nastasia Tang, an associate psychologist, and host Noora Juma’at, a former peer support specialist with IMH, we share practical tips and compassionate strategies to guide these conversations. • 🎉 IMH Family Day 2024: Sports Mania! On 6 December 2024, nearly 2,000 staff and families gathered for an unforgettable day of fun, energy, and celebration. Children were all smiles as they bounced on castles, dived into ball pits, and won prizes from claw machines. The excitement peaked with telematches that ignited the competitive spirit of our sporty colleagues and their enthusiastic families. Delectable treats were in abundance, ranging from bubble tea and popcorn to Old Chang Kee favourites and creamy gelato, creating a feast to remember. The day culminated in a thrilling grand finale—a lucky draw that kept everyone on the edge of their seats, with the coveted top prize being the brand-new iPhone 16 Pro!  A massive thank you to the organising committee and all who joined in to make the day such a roaring success! 💙 #IMHFamilyDay #SportsMania

  • Last week, we organised a special year-end celebration to celebrate our Filipino staff, who are a vital part of our nursing team. Their unwavering dedication, heartfelt compassion, and vibrant culture not only enrich the IMH family but also leave a meaningful and lasting impact on our patients’ lives. 🏥✨ As Chief Nurse Raveen Dev shared during the event: "Your work here is not just about providing medical care — it is about providing comfort, hope, and dignity to those who are struggling with their mental health. These are the very values that the Christmas season embodies — love, kindness, and a selfless spirit of giving." For Filipinos, Christmas is more than a holiday — it's a time for connection, love, and family. Even while being far from home, our Filipino colleagues have built a second family here at IMH, continuing to shine their light of hope and compassion for our patients and the community. 🎄✨ We are deeply grateful for the sacrifices our Filipino colleagues make, especially being away from family during the festive season, and for the exceptional care they provide every day. 💙 #IMHFamily #MentalHealthCare

  • 📸 A look back at our talk on the innovative Bergen 4-day Treatment for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), where our clinical psychologists shared insights from our pilot study in Singapore. This evidence-based approach seeks to transform treatment for OCD, and bring about impactful outcomes for persons affected by it. ✨ Key insights from Dr. Nisha Chandwani, Consultant & Chief, Department of Mood & Anxiety at IMH: "At IMH's Department of Mood & Anxiety, we manage major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and perinatal conditions, and also provide neurostimulation treatments and psychodynamic psychotherapy. Through this forum for professionals, we aim to give updates on the latest international evidence for the conditions we manage, and share our experience of incorporating emerging treatments into clinical practice. On this platform, we also seek to provide networking opportunities that enable collaborations to improve patient care through evidence-based practice." Thank you to all who joined us for this forum! Let’s continue working together to shape the future of mental health care.
