"How can strain and composition improve the piezoelectric properties of scandium-doped aluminum nitride?" Piezoelectric materials are critical in devices that mimic brain functions by converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. By changing the amount of scandium in the material, a research study found that the best performance occurs when there is less than 50% scandium, where the material shows strong piezoelectric behaviour. Adding strain to the material further boosts its performance, and less strain is needed as the scandium content increases. These results could lead to more energy-efficient, adaptable systems that mimic biological processes. This work was shortlisted as the Best Poster Award Nominee at the 2024 MRS Fall Meeting and Exhibit Conference held from 1-6 Dec in Boston, Massachusetts. Quantum entanglement enables secure, high-efficiency communication, with satellite teleportation distances reaching 1,400 km. However, noise and device imperfections reduce teleportation quality. Researchers at A*STAR Institute of High Performance Computing (A*STAR IHPC) explored the use of ‘catalysts’—additional entangled states that improve fidelity without being consumed, similar to chemical catalysts. The results? Allowing slight consumption of these catalysts yields ‘embezzling catalysts,’ which enhance the practicality and scalability of quantum communication, representing a significant step toward realising more robust quantum networks. A*STAR Institute of High Performance Computing (A*STAR IHPC) is excited to contribute our expertise in modelling and simulation and generate numerous computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models for optimal parametric designs. This study analysed the airflow and infectious droplet transmissions, to better optimise bed layout configurations while ensuring health safety and privacy for the foreign workers. Thank you, Public Sector Science & Technology Policy and Plans Office (S&TPPO) for the mention. S&TPPO is proud to collaborate with the Ministry of Manpower and other partners to drive innovations in dormitory design with the NESST Singapore Limited Tukang facility, Singapore's first government-built and owned dormitory. This project highlights how collaboration can improve living conditions for migrant workers, enhancing liveability, sustainability and readiness for future pandemics. In partnership with A*STAR - Agency for Science, Technology and Research Institute of High Performance Computing (A*STAR IHPC), a comprehensive Modelling and Simulation (M&S) study was conducted to optimise bed configurations using computational fluid dynamics. By analysing airflow and droplet transmission (see image below), the study identified efficient and sustainable designs that improve safety and privacy, meeting stringent health standards while supporting Singapore’s decarbonisation goals. We also teamed up with MOM and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) on a Design Innovation study to enhance dormitory operations and management. Through engagements with migrant workers and dormitory staff, the team identified key user pain points, developed prototypes, and proposed features for the dormitory’s management system to enrich the living experience and well-being of our migrant workers. Thank you to all our partners for their commitment and contributions to this meaningful project. Together, we are shaping better living environments for our migrant workers—ones that are safe, comfortable, and sustainable for the future. 15 Nov 2024 marked a significant milestone in Singapore's quantum journey, as a delegation of Singapore's quantum leaders visited Quantinuum's offices in Colorado, USA. During the visit, the team had the opportunity to explore the state-of-the-art "H-Lab," where Quantinuum's scientists and engineers are pushing the boundaries of high-performance, trapped-ion quantum computing. The visit culminated in the signing of a Master Research Collaboration Agreement (MRCA), deepening the collaboration between Quantinuum, A*STAR - Agency for Science, Technology and Research, National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC) Singapore and National University of Singapore. Building on the foundation laid by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in July 2024, this expanded partnership will foster joint initiatives in computational biology and quantum finance. The Singapore delegation includes the National Quantum Office, National Research Foundation Singapore, National Quantum Federated Foundry and partners from the Centre for Quantum Technologies, A*STAR Institute of High Performance Computing (A*STAR IHPC), and NSCC Singapore. This agreement also sets the stage for collaborative projects involving the Bioinformatics Institute, A*STAR and Duke-NUS Medical School. 📷 Quantinuum #IHPC #QuantumComputing #Supercomputing #HPC #Innovation #QuantumTech
