Leadership and Mentorship | Ecosystem Builder | I help Startups and People find their purpose and make a difference!

2024 was a year of change... And it most definitely was a year of continued impact! Organising Futsal For Hope in December was probably not wise as we were at the mercy of the rain deities, but thankfully the sun shone upon us earlier in the month. Futsal For Hope 2024 is our 2nd run, and organised with the generous support from our startup pitch competition, Angels Arena. We had more than 100 youths from Beyond Social Services for both Under-12 and Under-17 categories, with boys and girls playing together. Beyond Social Services is a charity dedicated to helping children and youths from less privileged backgrounds break away from the poverty cycle, and Asia Startup Network is glad to be able to support them through various channels since 2020. While organising this event in December was not ideal from an event planning perspective ⛈️ I look back on this day fondly because I couldn't have asked for a better wrap up to the end of the year, spending the day out and about with my family, finding pockets of time to network and catch up with our volunteers, and bringing joy to the youths participating in the competition (for the first time, we had a Challenge Trophy, and yes that means we will aim to organise this event every year!). This event couldn't have been accomplished without the help of Beyond's staff and community parents, Elise Tan Yee Ling and our team, and a true champion of good (and my cousin) Celeste Tang with her SportCares youth leaders. Shout-out to our sponsors too! Maybe next year, we will have LFC Foundation and Standard Chartered 😁 #sports #football #charity #youth

    I create for impact.

Criticism is easy. Building something new is hard. I know this firsthand because I review and critique many impact startup ideas at SUSS Entrepreneurship. Earlier this month, however, I found myself on the other side of the table at Asia Startup Network’s pre-founder bootcamp. Pitching my own idea reminded me how vulnerable it feels to carve out something new—especially when it's something you care about deeply. In navigating feedback from ASN's network of founders and investors, I came to appreciate how much clarity and courage it takes to stake claim as a founder. I'm working on an idea to help educators (like me!) integrate real-world education into their classrooms while building their professional development. It's exciting but also messy—like any untested idea, it's filled with uncertainties. The bootcamp wasn't just about refining the concept; it was about building my resolve to advocate for the impact I want to create. Here's what the experience clarified for me: ideas are just hypotheses. The real work is in equipping founders with the tools and resilience to navigate feedback, refine their thinking, and advocate for what matters. Founders don't need perfect ideas; they need to become skilled at championing their cause even when the path is unclear. If you're working on something new and are feeling unsure, keep going. Seek out people who will challenge you constructively and help you sharpen your thinking. Let them push you to grow into someone who can lead your vision forward. _ _ _ A huge thank you to Elise Tan and Andrew Tan for fostering a supportive learning space at ASN. Special mention to Tse-Kai H., who patiently helped me with my deluge of unstructured thoughts. And to anyone looking for a space to grow your idea (and themself), do consider finding community with the Asia Startup Network!

"It took us months to plan and execute the 2 events but seeing the smiles on the youths' faces at Futsal For Hope made it worth all the while." We successfully organised our inaugural Futsal For Hope last Wednesday, thanks to the partnership of Beyond Social Services! Over the past three years, together with our amazing community, we have tirelessly raised donations totaling nearly $180,000. However, until now, we hadn't had the opportunity to personally connect with our beneficiaries and make a different and direct impact. At this futsal friendly competition, nearly 30 members from the #startup, #tech and #VC community teamed up with 20+ youths aged 13-17, under the care of Beyond Social Services. Eight teams passionately engaged in a round-robin 4x4 futsal tournament to vie for the coveted top title. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Team 3 youths and Diego TAIRA for emerging victorious and clinching the top prize! Despite the rain trying to dampen our spirits, our participants, boys and girls had great fun - the event was an absolute blast! We would like to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who supported and generously donated at the ASN Angels Arena event. Your contributions, totaling over $4,300 in net proceeds (after eventbrite deductions), played a vital role in making the Futsal For Hope event a reality. Additionally, the surplus funds have been graciously donated to Beyond Social Services to further their noble cause. Thank you Decathlon for sponsoring the court, Google for Developers space for sponsoring the venue for Angels Arena, NVPC - Towards a City of Good, NUS Alumni Ventures (NAV) and many others such as our speakers Jeremy Au 区汉辉, Lim Qing Ru, Zed for helping bring Angels Arena and Futsal For Hope to fruition. If you're eager to be part of our next Futsal event, please feel free to leave your comments below! Your continued enthusiasm and support are greatly appreciated. We also deeply appreciate our supporters including Beyond Social Services, SportsCare and S17 by The Saturday Movement (F&B), all our volunteers, especially Jack Leow and Aamir El-Edroos for making sure futsal event operations run smoothly, Sarah Tan for designing the shirt, Jeremiah Goh for designing the cheque and Francois de Moulliac for his kind sponsorship for #ASNAngelsarena.
