  • 🇨🇦 Iluta Lace, the director of MARTA Center, and Linda Saviele, the head of the specialist team, attended the abolitionist congress organized by Coalition for the Abolition of Prostitution - CAP international in Canada. The congress was attended by 400 participants from 35 countries. These organization helps victims of prostitution and pornography, as well as victims of other forms of sexual exploitation on a daily basis. 🟢 The congress also included survivors from the prostitution system from various countries around the world, all of whom shared their stories and highlighted the horrors of prostitution. We heard the stories of 18 survivors from New Zealand, Mexico, the USA, Canada, France, Moldova, and other countries, which illuminated that prostitution is brutal violence and torture. Therefore, it is essential to combat this exploitation system, including punishing the perpetrators. 💚 The congress began with an impressive march that was very emotional. A particularly touching moment was when a survivor from Montreal, who conducts sessions for sex buyers about the harm caused by buying sex, expressed her gratitude with tears in her eyes for our support and solidarity, flying across the ocean to participate in this event. #Abolitionism #Solidarity #HumanRights #MARTA #CAPInternational

  • Yesterday MARTA Centre representatives Iluta Lace, Beata Jonite and Madara Kanasta met with Ursula von der Leyen. We used the opportunity to introduce the European leader to our work and achievements in combating violence against women in Latvia. We are excited that a significant milestone has been reached under Ursula von der Leyen's political guidelines to take all necessary measures to prevent and combat violence against women, including domestic violence while ensuring the protection of victims and the prosecution of offenders. The European Parliament and the Council have reached a political agreement on the Commission's proposal for a Directive on combating violence against women and domestic violence, initially put forward in March 2022. This Directive stands as a groundbreaking achievement, marking the first comprehensive legal instrument at the EU level aimed at addressing the pervasive issue of violence against women within the European Union. The Directive criminalises physical violence, as well as psychological, economic and sexual violence against women across the EU, both offline and online. Female genital mutilation as well as forced marriage will be criminalised as stand-alone crimes. Moreover, the most widespread forms of cyber-violence will be criminalised under the new rules, including the non-consensual sharing of intimate images (including deepfakes), cyber-stalking, cyber-harassment, misogynous hate speech and “cyber-flashing”. These criminalisations will in particular help victims of these forms of cyberviolence in Member States that did not yet criminalise these acts. This is an urgent issue to address, given the exponential spread and dramatic impact of violence online.

  • 👏 Linda Saviele, our Specialists Team Leader, participates in the European Parliament video and talks about her work and the work of the MARTA Centre in creating an equal and violence-free society. 💬 'Our biggest goal is gender equality and, of course, the eradication of domestic violence. We must stop it. [...] Some women come to us when the violence or human trafficking has happened years ago, but there are cases where, for example, sexual violence happened yesterday and the woman is here today and it takes a lot more work and it's a lot harder,' reveals Linda.
