I was truly thankful for the chance to represent International Food Waste Coalition and speak at the international conference on food waste prevention, hosted by the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture #HU24EU and #FAO. While the recent Eurostat report on food waste (https://lnkd.in/eJHHXiP7) revealed some disappointing progress among member states, it was uplifting to see Hungary’s impressive 12% reduction since 2022 and the Netherlands’ remarkable 20% decrease since 2018. This was a wonderful opportunity to participate in a vibrant discussion on how to inspire consumers to tackle food waste. Our coalition is focusing on interventions aimed at schools, workplace canteens, and homes, addressing the Motivation, Opportunity, and Ability (MOA) of consumers to encourage behavioral changes that lead to better food management practices. I felt very proud to share the stage with a distinguished panel of food waste experts, including Gyula Kasza, Anja Katalin De Cunto, Betty Chang, Dr Richard Swannell FRSA, Sophie Attwood, and Sanne Stroosnijder.

We take immense pride in being part of this journey. Achieving the U.N. goal of halving per capita food waste by 2030 will require dedication, focus, and extensive collaboration. Dear Friends,   The IFWC is pleased to announce the publication of its 2024 report https://lnkd.in/eqZ45bTd, which reveals that contract catering companies involved in our program have collectively reduced food waste by 25% over the past five years, putting us halfway to our goal of cutting food waste by 50%.   Our initiative has now reached nearly 4,000 contract catering sites worldwide, reflecting an impressive 100% growth since 2022, with an ambitious target to expand to 10,000 sites in the coming year.   While the progress so far has been remarkable, further efforts are essential, as achieving additional food waste reductions will require greater collaboration, a focus on specific areas such as demand forecasting and consumer engagement, and the ability to establish specific food waste reduction targets for each segment.   This is where the IFWC provides support through our unique and collaborative actions.   A heartfelt shout-out to our members for their outstanding achievements: Sodexo, Elior Group, Compass Group USA, Accor, Best Western Hotels & Resorts, Leanpath, Winnow, and Orbisk | Zero Food Waste.   Now, more than ever, the battle against food waste continues! The EU has released an excellent report providing a detailed summary of the Voluntary Agreements and Coalitions in Europe that aim to address food waste. We are thrilled to see the report acknowledge the distinctiveness of IFWC, as it focuses on Europe and is dedicated to the hospitality and food service industry. The International Food Waste Coalition and its hotel partners, Accor and Best Western Hotels & Resorts , are honored to be winners of the call for projects of the National Food Program (PNA) launched by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Labor and Solidarity, in collaboration with ADEME. Dedicated to reducing food waste, the project will aim to support hotel establishments to achieve ambitious levels of waste in line with their operational context. In addition, it will integrate the fight against food waste into a global sustainable food approach, by involving consumers and evaluating virtuous economic models. This project, carried out nationally from May 2024 to the end of 2025, will be managed by the IFWC in partnership with Accor and Best Western Hotels & Resorts. It will highlight the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors to step up the fight against food waste. Also, the IFWC continues to encourage other hotel groups to join this project to address the challenges of sustainable food in the sector. IFWC is thrilled to announce the release of its updated food waste measurement and reporting methodology tailored specifically for the contract catering sector. The IFWC methodology for measuring and reporting food waste (FW) aligns with the core principles of the UNEP Food Waste Index, which supports UN SGD 12.3, and complies with the measurement methodology and minimum quality standards of the European Union. This methodology ensures consistent definitions, scope, and metrics. The only deviation from the EU scope is the inclusion of soup wastage in our food waste definition and reporting. While this may differ slightly from the EU definition, IFWC aims to promote a more inclusive approach to food waste by encompassing soups in our measurement scope. This updated methodology will be used to assess the 2023 data, with data collection underway for over 5,000 sites.
