800,000 deaths every year—1 in 11 deaths in the WHO European Region—are linked to alcohol. This is the reality that brought together health professionals from across Europe yesterday, to discuss coordinated action. WHO Europe, in collaboration with the European Association for the Study of the Liver - EASL | The Home of Hepatology, initiated this dialogue by organizing the first European alcohol health alliance symposium. As Europe faces the highest rates of alcohol-related diseases and disorders, health professionals across the region have a crucial in driving change, influencing policy, and reducing the burden of alcohol-related harm. “Health professionals are ideally positioned to start conversations and to champion best practices in reducing alcohol-related harm. This goes beyond health services and extends to wider settings. Without their active engagement, the challenge of achieving the adoption of these critical policies is unlikely to be met. Their leadership can make all the difference.” — Gauden Galea, Special Adviser to the Regional Director for Europe on NCDs and Innovation. Yesterday's discussions focused on creating a united front. Through knowledge exchange, collaboration, and innovative tools like the WHO/Europe AI tool, this initial conversation aims to build a stronger, more effective alliance to address alcohol harm. Together, we can make a significant difference and create a healthier, more resilient Europe. #EVIDAction Aleksander Krag UEG - United European Gastroenterology European Medical Students’ Association (EMSA) Association of European Cancer Leagues World Heart Federation
