About us

EAVI - Media Literacy for Citizenship is an independent, not-for-profit international organization based in Brussels. EAVI's primary objective is to promote and enhance the interests of citizens as media users across Europe. Our ambition is to empower individuals to be more than simply globalised consumers of media, but rather Citizens of Europe who benefit from it. To achieve its objectives, EAVI develops and implements a wide range of activities. Many of the initiatives involve citizens and organisations from many of the 27 Member States. We focus on promoting full active citizenship and media literacy by engaging European Institutions and policy-makers.

Sounds terrible, right? 🧑💻️ The economy has reached a point where our attention has become a commodity that can be turned into a profit. We give our attention for free in exchange for the content we see on our screens. 💪 The quality of the content matters. There is no question that there can be helpful and factual content that can benefit you. But deciding which is worth your time and attention is up to you. You are in control of what you want to spend your attention on. 🍽 So, what are you eating through your screens? "Curiosity", answered someone when asked what the biggest takeaway they pocketed from the #Voices Festival was. Leaving an event with a strong desire to explore or learn more is perhaps one of its greatest successes 🙌 Before Croatia, Voices kicked off in Florence in March 2024 and gathered over 1300 people. We cannot wait to discover what will be the takeaways sparked in Zagreb on 28 February - 1 March 2025 📅 ➡️ Sessions will explore pressing topics like AI in journalism, disinformation, journalist safety, media literacy, elections' integrity, EU media legislation, digital parenting, and more. Save the date and get your free tickets at 🟠 https://voicesfestival.eu/

  • 🚩 Today's lunch recommendation: Avoid Propaganda Raw Red Meat. It's notorious for being indigestible and overwhelming. 🚨 In our daily media interactions, we often face propaganda that aims to manipulate our emotions and influence our perspectives. Entities like governments and corporations leverage propaganda to shape our values and opinions by spreading misinformation and fear among the public. 🤳 While propaganda historically relied on radio and posters for dissemination, the digital era has transformed it into a participatory experience. We are no longer passive recipients but actively engaged in political discussions, amplifying the spread of propaganda. 🍽 So, what are you eating through your screens? For a detailed ingredient list and the complete recipe, including more information on propaganda in the digital age, please visit: https://lnkd.in/e7ui_uz3 #eavifoodmenu #medialiteracy #propaganda

🚀As we are on a mission to empower teachers for digital media literacy, we also follow related policy developments to be able to create a wider impact by initiating a public debate and contributing to a policy reform on digital media literacy education at national and European levels. Check out this new web article by our partner the European Association for Viewers Interests (EAVI), the voice of media literacy in Europe, offering a comprehensive overview of the media literacy policies at EU level.💡 🇪🇺 EU takes significant steps to regulate the digital space, addressing challenges such as disinformation, harmful content, and threats to democratic values. Through forward-thinking policies, EU promotes media freedom and literacy while striving to create a safer and more inclusive digital environment for all. 🤳 The Digital Services Act is a legislative milestone that: 📌 holds platforms accountable for disinformation, illegal content, and data misuse 📌 prioritises platform transparency by mandating that platforms disclose the algorithms behind their content recommendations and moderation decisions. Transparency is crucial in this context as it not only builds trust but also empowers users to evaluate the information they encounter online critically. 🌍 Yet the act’s effectiveness is also relevant to citizens’ critical engagement with digital experiences. By practising media literacy, individuals can navigate the online world more responsibly, understand platform operations, and contribute to a safer and more transparent digital environment. 🔗 As the EU shapes the future of media regulation, fostering an informed and empowered citizenry remains essential. • 🧑🍳 What’s on your menu today? Let’s talk about a dish you might want to skip: Bye-Bye Democracy Pork Pies. 🚩 Served up by power-hungry authorities who know just how to stir the pot on social media to serve their own interests. 📣 Social media is a powerful space for free expression, but in the wrong hands, it can become a tool for manipulation, shaping how we think, feel, and even vote. 🤔 Fake news and disinformation are easily spread on online platforms. The vast amount of online content can sometimes confuse us about what to believe and what to avoid. As a result, we may not make informed political decisions or identify the motivation behind the political content we see. 🍽 So, what are you eating through your screens?
