  • 🏗️ Podcast contribution: Can we build new buildings using old ones? As the linear way of construction reaches its limits—resources, waste space, and the biosphere's capacity to absorb greenhouse gases—it is worth exploring practices that embrace a circular model instead. The recent episode of The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)’s podcast “21st Century Construction” delves into how the construction industry could become more circular, featuring examples from New York, Brussels and London. 👉 In Brussels, Michael Moradiellos del Molino, International Head of Sustainability and Circularity at Drees & Sommer, and Frederik Jacobs, Architect, CEO at CONIX RDBM Architects, discuss two landmark Urban Mining projects. The renovations of the Multi tower and ZIN have shifted the mindset in Brussels, demonstrating the potential for material reuse and leading to stricter demolition regulations. ✔️ The ZIN project, developed by Befimmo, is one of the largest Urban Mining projects in Europe, spanning over 110,000 m². Over 1,000 tons of materials were reused, and 30,000 tons were upcycled. ✔️ The Multi tower was the first CO2-neutral office building in Brussels. The project reused 89% of the existing concrete, saving 3,259 tons of embedded carbon and 20,000 tons of waste. To enable Urban Mining on a larger scale, it is essential to present the scientific and business case for reuse in a way that all stakeholders can understand and work with. Ultimately, it is not about advocating for a single solution to address sustainability in construction. There are multiple approaches: building with wood or concrete, undertaking renovations, partial renovations, or new constructions. “We will need to find solutions everywhere,” says Michael Moradiellos del Molino. Ben jij erbij?

  • 🌟 Exciting International Collaboration at Drees & Sommer! 🌟 Last week, our Brussels and Frankfurt teams had the pleasure of hosting a delegation of 20 HR Directors from Shanghai, organized by BVMW - Bundesverband mittelständische Wirtschaft e.V. This visit was a fantastic opportunity to showcase Drees & Sommer’s innovative approach to #ESG and #sustainability. Our guests were warmly welcomed by Peter Junker, Associate Partner Drees & Sommer, and given a tour of our new Frankfurt office. The highlight of the visit was a comprehensive presentation on Europe’s Sustainability Transition by our ESG expert, Linus Grob from the Brussels team. The session sparked engaging discussions on the challenges and opportunities for the labor market, with insights shared in Chinese, English, and German, thanks to our colleague Feng Shen. Our guests were impressed by some of the more advanced ESG strategies being implemented in Europe. The feedback from our visitors was overwhelmingly positive, and we are thrilled to have inspired new ideas and perspectives on ESG. 🚀We look forward to continuing this valuable exchange of knowledge and fostering international collaboration. Stay tuned with us!

  • 🌍 Transforming Waste into Wealth: Highlights from Our Urban Mining Press Tour 🌍 Last Wednesday, we hosted an international press tour in Brussels, focusing on the innovative concept of Urban Mining. We visited two pioneering projects: the Multi tower and ZIN. Journalists from leading business, real estate, and construction publications across Europe joined us, contributing to a lively discussion alongside experts who shaped these projects. 👉 Urban Mining is revolutionizing the way we handle waste by extracting valuable materials from existing buildings and infrastructure. This approach addresses the critical issue of finite resources and supports the circular economy by reusing and upcycling building materials. The ZIN project and the Multi tower in Brussels are prime examples of successful Urban Mining initiatives. 👉 The Multi tower, developed by Immobel and Whitewood, is a 44,000 m² project and the first CO2-neutral office building in Brussels. It has reused 89% of its existing concrete, significantly reducing embodied carbon and waste. 👉 The ZIN project, developed by Befimmo, spans over 110,000 m² and is one of the largest Urban Mining projects in Europe. It has reused over 1,000 tons of materials and upcycled 30,000 tons, setting new standards for sustainable construction. 95% of the pre-existing towers' mass is reused or recycled, with only 5% non-recovered waste. ✔️ Drees & Sommer and EPEA Benelux have provided Cradle to Cradle consulting and supported the integration of circular economy principles in these projects. Thank you Michael Moradiellos del Molino, Frederik Jacobs, Geoffroy Knipping, Hein van Tuijl and Linus Grob for sharing all the background on the projects and the topics of Urban Mining, Cradle to Cradle, and ESG. A big thank you to Whitewood for making our visit at Multi possible! We are excited to see how these projects and the Brussels example will inspire future sustainable construction initiatives across Europe.
