This was Are We Europe & Awe Studio in 2024 ✨ As the year comes to an end, we at Are We Europe and Awe Studio reflect on a dynamic 12 months, both in our organisations and the continent at large. 💡From design sprints across Europe to campaigns and editorial productions advocating for the EU elections, sustainability, and diversity in media, we worked tirelessly to innovate and diversify the European media & communication landscapes. 🌐 With our newly launched creative online community, the Awe Community, and at industry events such as The Circle in Paris and Check’Europe in Brussels, we connected with journalists, media professionals and organisations to inform and inspire European audiences. 🎤 With our new teams in Amsterdam and Berlin, we shared great moments and karaoke mics over meals, coffees and drinks along the way. With reflection also comes a fresh outlook: 2025 is a critical year for Europe and the world where unstable governments, cuts in cultural and media funding, and wars and conflicts challenge our democracy and freedoms. It’s time to come even closer together as a community and inspire constructive responses to these challenges. Until then, we gather our strength as an organisation and individuals, so that we can come back with new energy. See you soon!

About us
For too long, headlines about Europe have obsessed over Brussels, Brexit, and borders, ignoring the bigger picture. We believe Europe needs journalism that collaborates across nations, generations and identities. That highlights solutions to shared challenges. That focuses on its people.

Today we meet Leah Pattem: journalist and member of the Migravoice community Leah is a multi-award-winning investigative journalist, photojournalist and broadcast journalist specialising in politics, migration and community stories. Based in Spain, she has founded the hyper-local community journalism project, Madrid No Frills, which focuses on Madrid’s social issues, movements and identity. She is also a professor of journalism and photojournalism and runs courses for both university students and professional journalists. Leah makes a conscious effort to work with the many talented professionals and experts from marginalised class, gender, ethnicity and ability backgrounds. This is not generally the case in Spain’s mainstream journalism and is something that must urgently change. Are you a journalist who is also looking to diversify your sources? This week is all about honouring the contributions of migrants and building respect for their rights! This Wednesday, 18 December, marks International Migrants Day which serves as a reminder of the abundance of stories and voices behind longstanding, often simplified media narratives about migration. With the MigraVoice Superpower Community, we connect journalists and media with migrant experts in different fields to challenge these simplified narratives and amplify the voices of migrants across Europe. In the coming days, expect to hear from experts, journalists, and ambassadors from the MigraVoice community! Do you also want to help us build a more diverse European media landscape? Then find more info and join the MigraVoice Superpower Community at migravoice.eu. Last month, the Awe and Check’Europe teams brought together 80+ media makers and creatives from all over Europe for a one-day conference dedicated to improving European media. We kicked-off with a design sprint exploring the implications of generative AI tools, like ChatGPT, on the quality and accuracy of information in today’s media space. Joined by fact-checking expert Vincent Couronne, Sabrina Faramarzi and Giliam Ganzevles guided workshop participants - from outlining the key challenges all the way to sketching creative solutions. In the afternoon, together with partners JEF Europe, Les Jeunes Européens - France, Le Taurillon, and Madmoizelle.com, we discussed best-practice examples for reporting about European topics, engaged in lively discussions about the future of European journalism, and went outdoors to explore the workings of systems and their implications on storytelling.. We ended the day with an informal gathering around some food, drinks and music - giving our team, partners and participants the chance to connect. A special thank goes out to Reset Atelier (Reset! network) for hosting us in their space in Brussels and to all conference participants for their time and dedication. For us it was certainly a valuable experience and we can’t wait to do it all again in the near future!
