Why I Choose to Be a Servant Leader and Volunteer for YPO Leadership is not about titles, ego or authority. (Hopefully that statement isn’t new to you….) It’s about service. For me, being a servant leader means putting others first, fostering growth, and creating meaningful impact. This philosophy is why I dedicate my time and energy to volunteering for roles within YPO. YPO is more than a network; it’s a community of leaders united by a shared commitment to learning, collaboration, and transformation. Volunteering here gives us the opportunity to serve alongside exceptional individuals who inspire me daily. Whether it’s organizing impactful events, mentoring emerging leaders, or helping navigate complex challenges, every moment spent in service reinforces the values I hold dear. We strive to lead by example, listen with intention, and create spaces where everyone feels empowered to thrive. The rewards are immeasurable—personal growth, lifelong connections, and the privilege of contributing to something greater than ourselves. Leadership isn’t about what you achieve—it’s about what you enable others to achieve. I am grateful to YPO for allowing me to live out this belief and for the chance to grow alongside a community of purpose-driven leaders. Its honestly humbling to be considered NZ's Top 200, 2024 Visionary Leaders. Through YPO, I’ve met many remarkable people and had incredible experiences, but for me, it’s the women of YPO who truly make it so enriching. This week, two of them shone a light for me on something very important. Firstly, Felicity Walsh (pictured on the right in the grainy party pic) is Managing Director of a major asset management firm—and also a great laugh. She shared how, working in a heavily male-dominated industry, she’s often told it's hard to find qualified women for top jobs, but despite this, she's managed to build a senior team brimming with talented women. Her story reinforces a vital point: women often recognise and elevate other women’s capabilities more readily than many men do. This is a call to action for men to approach their teams and hiring processes with open minds. The evidence of the tangible benefits of female leadership is mounting. Then there’s Joanne Goldman, one of the first women I met at YPO, when female membership in our chapter was under 10%. As Women’s Officer, she’s driven recruitment, fostered engagement, and created opportunities for women to connect and grow. Today, female membership has grown significantly, thanks to her refusal to accept that “there aren’t enough qualified women.” She found them, and we’re all better for it. Felicity and Jo are proof that when you make the effort to find talent, you succeed.
