Australian International Education Conference (AIEC) reposted this
Last month, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Australian International Education Conference (AIEC), hosted by The PIE. 📝 Along with my fellow City of Melbourne Student Ambassadors, I joined the cafe session focused on ‘Careers and Employability’ for international students. This event brought together experts from various fields to discuss and explore strategies to enhance career opportunities and employability for international students. During our roundtable discussion, Bilal Ahmed and I had the pleasure of sharing our experiences with several delegates, including Clare Harper and Louisa T.. It was an enriching experience to exchange ideas and insights with such a diverse and knowledgeable group. A special thank you to Lisa Phillipps FCCA and the City of Melbourne for this amazing event. Looking forward to implementing the valuable learnings and continuing to support the international student community! And that’s a wrap, folks! The final day of AIEC 2024 started strongly, with attendees hearing the incredible story of author Abbas Nazari. A former Afghan refugee who fled Taliban rule in 2001, Abbas has since gone on to live an inspirational life, having merited a Fulbright scholarship and earned a Masters degree. Attendees were graced with Abbas’ story, which detailed the positive impact education had on his life and his uplifting experiences as an international student. It was yet another example of just how important such stories (i.e. the human element) is for our sector. After a quick break for morning tea, attendees were once again treated to an insightful plenary, this time featuring a diverse panel of international students who each shared their personal experiences about studying in Victoria, including the challenges and exciting opportunities that came with it. Sustainability was next on the agenda, with the magnificent Dr Dianne McGrath CSP CPM treating our attendees to a keynote exploring the many ways in which individually – and as an entire sector – we can have a positive impact on the three pillars of sustainability: economic, environmental, and social. AIEC 2024 wrapped up with International Education Association of Australia (IEAA) and IDP Education Ltd, as well as the Conference Organisers proffering their thanks to all involved with making event the success it is. Many months – and even years – goes into planning every AIEC. And once again, with another packed out conference in the world’s most liveable city, Melbourne, we’re proud to say it was well and truly worth it! Highlights from the week will be available to view on the website in the coming days, including photos, videos, proceedings from sessions and more. We can’t wait to see you all at AIEC in Canberra – navigating change as a sector into 2025. IDP Education Ltd International Education Association of Australia (IEAA) #aiec2024 #aiec2025

AIEC 2024 continues onward, with Thursday providing plenty of exhibits, presentations, and discussions. And what better way to get yourself prepped for such a jam-packed day than a fun run for a good cause? The Acumen, Part of Sannam S4 Group 5K fun run returned for a second year, with dozens of AIEC attendees getting dressed in their Thursday morning best for a run around the Convention Centre. The event raised money for the Veerni Literacy Programme, which empowers girls in Rajasthan to access important education services. There was barely any time for attendees to catch their breath, as #aiec2024 kicked off with an opening National Strategy Townhall, hosted by Prof Stan Grant and featuring a panel of sector dignitaries – including Phil Honeywood of International Education Association of Australia (IEAA), Caroline Hartnett of Study Melbourne, Alison Garrod of Temporary Visas Branch Australian Department of Home Affairs, and Simon Puckett of the Australian Government Department of Education. Attendees had the opportunity to ask the panel questions on the implementation of the strategy, resulting in some timely and enlightening discussions. Inspire sessions (and follow up conversations in the Inspire Lounge) covered off TNE, marketing, strategy and country insights, investigating case studies and research findings. Other sessions included discussions on social license, data analysis, ensuring student success, sustainability, intercultural collaborations, cyber-attack preparedness, university rankings and more. Conversations sparked by these sessions were held in the Braindate lounge, encouraging debate as well as a chance to meet new connections. In the Exhibition Hall, delegates took part in workshops at the Sustainability Lounge co-hosted by CANIE: Climate Action Network for International Educators, International Education Sustainability Group, and Value Learning Intercultural Specialists to learn how to implement sustainability and diversity practices in their own organisations. The Naarm Lounge was also open for attendees to learn more about the history, culture and language of the people of the Kulin Nation; the traditional custodians of the land on which AIEC 2024 is being held. There’s been some other great stands this year – of note, the Medibank therapy dogs, the Acumen booth made entirely of recycled cardboard, and the Allianz booth offering Free Health Checks. And who could forget that tried-and-true Smoothie Pedal-Bike, where attendees could mix up their favourite smoothie ingredients by getting their legs a-peddling. AIEC attendees will now shift their enthusiasm to the Medallion Room at Marvel Stadium where the Conference Dinner will take place – sponsored by IDP Education Ltd. And with tonight’s theme being ‘Hollywood Nights’, we’re expecting our AIEC delegates to dress in their Hollywood best and to be camera-ready! We can’t wait to see you all tomorrow for the final day of what has already been a fantastic AIEC!

What a way to kick off AIEC 2024! Our first day at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre got off to a fantastic start with some preconference sessions, focusing on International Education data and an in-depth introduction to the conference for first timers. There’s so much on at AIEC and getting the inside info can make all the difference for this packed week of #intled events. AIEC 2024 is held on Naarm, and we were welcomed to the lands of the Kulin nation with a smoking ceremony conducted by elders of the Wurundjeri people. Following this, the doors to the Exhibition Hall for 2024 were opened – over 70 exhibitors and sponsors filled the 3,000sqm room, where attendees were treated to multiple pavilions, stands, and exhibits showcasing the many diverse aspects of our sector. These included our Sustainability Lounge, at which attendees could stop by to learn about their impacts on the planet and share ideas on how we can create a more sustainable future for the sector. Braindates were also back on the agenda on this opening day of the conference, with multiple delegates convening at the Braindate Lounge to discuss important topics and form connections with other attendees. The day was capped-off with the Welcome Reception, held in the exhibition hall. Sponsored by AIEC 2024’s Destination Partner, Study Melbourne, the event allowed guests the chance to network and catch up with colleagues over a drink whilst touring the multiple exhibits and booths.
