Today marked the fifth anniversary of the Cudlee Creek bushfires which destroyed 87 homes and burned through over 23,000ha, including vineyards, in South Australia’s Adelaide Hills. Among those impacted by the fires was fifth-generation grapegrower Simon Tolley. Smoke taint meant the fruit from his Woodside vineyard couldn’t be used to make wine. Instead, he donated some of it to University of Adelaide PhD student Hugh Holds. As part of his research, supported by a top-up scholarship from Wine Australia, Hugh used the smoke-tainted grapes from Simon’s vineyard to make a barrel-aged brandy - the Simon Tolley Wines Smoked Brandy, which was launched today. For comparison, attendees at today’s launch were given the opportunity to taste a Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Shiraz made with fruit harvested from Simon’s vineyard in 2019. It was interesting to observe the differences in people’s perceptions of smoke taint in those wines. Some would have been happy to drink at least one of them. I admit I’m not much of a brandy drinker, but this initiative gives producers with smoke-affected fruit and wine another option in their toolkit when there are currently few tools around.

A smoke sensor system that has been trialled in vineyards in north-east Victoria over the last couple of seasons is a step closer to being ready for roll out across the sector following the recent signing of a commercial partner to progress the technology to market. Called Wine Industry Smoke Detectors (WISDs) – colloquially known as ‘wizards’ – the field data loggers provide a real-time assessment of smoke taint risk to give vineyard managers an immediate heads-up about whether smoke in their areas is a threat to their vineyards. The ARC Training Centre in Plant Biosecurity is recruiting PhD students and early career researchers to investigate novel approaches to prevent, respond to and recover from various plant pests and diseases that threaten Australia’s economy and environment. Applications for 10 PhD projects are currently open with additional projects to be released in early 2025. The aims of one of the current projects is to address key knowledge gaps in our understanding of scale and mealybug biology and ecology in viticulture. Improving the design and implementation of spore traps, social licence during biosecurity outbreaks, the epidemiology of Botryosphaeriaceae associated with mango dieback, and fall armyworm population genomics and biocontrol options are among the other current projects on offer.
