📣 Join us TODAY for this #HopkinsHour Event ! 📣 In recognition of Human Rights Week (Dec 1-10) and International Day of People with Disability (Dec 3) happening this week, join Centre Director Prof. Tim Geraghty & a panel of Program 1 researchers including Samantha Borg, Dr. Annette Kifley and Dr. Camila Quel de Oliveira for a very special update from the Aus-InSCI project. The International Spinal Cord Injury (#InSCI) Community Survey is the first ever worldwide survey for people with SCI living in the community. It forms part of a Learning Health System for SCI and is linked with wider initiatives, in particular the World Health Organization Rehabilitation 2030, a Call for Action. Australia is one country among many others taking part in this project to capture the lived experience of people with SCI by asking those who know best: people with lived experience of SCI. The project is a survey for people with SCI living in the community who have been discharged from a #rehabilitation facility for at least 12 months. The Australian arm of InSCI is known as Aus-InSCI Community Survey. In this event: 💡 Prof. Geraghty will provide an introduction and background to Aus-InSCI, 💡 Samantha Borg who will share findings on health service use and unmet healthcare needs in SCI, from an Australian cross-sectional study. 💡 Dr Annette Kifley, Senior Research Fellow, John Walsh Centre for Rehabilitation Research, will then discuss the burden and impact of #hidden disability in people with SCI 💡 Dr Camila Quel De Oliveira, Senior Lecturer, Physiotherapy University of Technology Sydney, Graduate School of Health - Discipline of Physiotherapy, will discuss leisure-time physical activity for individuals with SCI. The presentations will be followed by a stimulating #panel discussion, with audience Q&A. This is sure to be a stimulating program! Research for Rehabilitation and Resilience
About us
The Hopkins Centre Research for Rehabilitation and Resilience A joint initiative of the Menzies Health Institute of Qld, Griffith University and the Division of Rehabilitation, Metro South Health and Hospital Service in partnership with the Motor Accident Insurance Commission, Spinal Life Australia, Synapse, and Health Consumers Queensland. The Hopkins Centre is committed to improving disability and rehabilitation practices, service delivery and systems by developing, translating and implementing interdisciplinary research evidence about real world problems. The Centre focuses on research of relevance to people living with the long-term consequences of acquired brain injury, amputation, persistent pain, and spinal cord injury as well as developmental, age-related and other life-long disabling conditions. The Centre is located at Griffith University, Logan campus and Princess Alexandra Hospital, Metro Health South. It brings together clinicians, policy makers, academics and consumers to facilitate opportunities for research exchange and excellence. The Centre is ideally positioned to lead translation of research into policy and clinical practice through these collaborations. Research is generated at the interface with end-users rather than in isolation. Solutions are immediately relevant to practitioners, policy makers and consumers. By creating an environment for sustainable collaborations and partnerships, we will expand research potential and impact in Queensland and beyond.

Yesterday we celebrated International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) 2024. We welcomed special guests from The Hopkins Centre at Griffith University, including human rights activist Kevin Cocks AM GAICD and Research Fellow Kelsey Chapman. Kelsey is currently leading The Dignity Project in understanding how people with disability experience social, personal, and systemic dignity. Read more here: https://bit.ly/4fUnQYU We were also proud to officially launch the NIISQ Agency Disability Service Plan (DSP) and heard from some of the working group members about the purpose and significance of the co-designed DSP for the NIISQ Agency and our employees with disability 📝 To bring the day’s event to a close, we premiered our new participant video sharing Jan’s story and the difference NIISQ has made in her life since she suffered a brachial plexus injury in 2021 🎥 Watch Jan’s video here: https://bit.ly/4eZLZfq Disability as a result of road trauma is just one part of the bigger picture – but we are committed to making a difference in any effort and support we can today and every day. #InternationalDayofPeoplewithDisability #IDPwD #DisabilityServicePlan
