5 Star Weekly Briefing - Firstly we would like to wish you all a Happy New Year. May 2025 be filled with Happiness, Good Health & Prosperity. In this week's episode, we look at the key hospitality technology trends for 2025 and beyond as outlined by the EHL Graduate School. We discuss the increasing use of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and other technologies to improve guest experiences and operational efficiency. We also examine how these advancements are transforming various aspects of the industry, from contactless services and mobile apps to robotics and automation, virtual and augmented reality, and data analytics. However, we stress that a significant focus needs to be placed on the importance of balancing technological integration with maintaining a human-centric approach to hospitality. Finally, the discussion stresses the competitive advantages and risks associated with adopting or failing to adopt these technologies and the need for staff training. This week in the 5 Star Weekly Briefing take a look at the 8 Travel and Hospitality Trends that Defined 2024. 2024's travel and hospitality trends revealed a year of economic pressures impacting consumer behaviour. Despite inflation, travel remained strong, with travellers prioritising value, leading to a resurgence in package holidays and exploration of emerging destinations. The influence of social media and AI was significant, both for travellers and the industry, which is now increasingly using AI for revenue management. Finally, the report notes a continued crackdown on short-term rentals, although their overall market remains robust. Enjoy and have a wonderful New Year🍾🥂🥳🎆. • Pre-Arrival Check-In = Efficiency + Upsells 🎉 "A 400-room hotel covered its mobile check-in cost with $39K in upsells." Pre-arrival check-in reshapes arrivals 🛬, giving guests control and boosting revenue. In a talk at William Angliss, I discussed how this tech meets guest expectations and improves operations—a true win-win 🔑📈 I wrote an article about it, and the link is in the first comment below. #Upselling #HotelOperations #GuestSatisfaction #WilliamAngliss

  • In this short clip taken from the 5-Star Conversation with Rodger Powell from THSA AustralAsia, he reflects on whether he chose hospitality or it chose him. Growing up in a family hospitality business, Rodger reveals that his father was determined none of his children would follow in his footsteps, encouraging them to pursue "real jobs" as lawyers or doctors. Despite this, Rodger and his siblings ultimately found their own paths, with none graduating university but each charting a course outside of their father’s intentions. Rodger’s story highlights the often unexpected journeys that lead to a fulfilling career in hospitality. Watch the interview on YouTube or listen to it on Apple and Spotify. • 🌟 Technology is not the solution to every problem. Whilst I am a self-confessed geek 🤓, the practical "Hotelier" side of me realises that Technology is not the solution to every problem. Each hotel and its guests have unique needs 🏨. I always advocate for a strategic approach 📊, carefully analysing your specific requirements before adopting any technology solution. Don't settle for a one-size-fits-all approach if you focus on creating unforgettable moments for your guests, you can't go wrong. ✨ What are your thoughts and experiences? #robots #hoteltechnology #guestexperience #technology4hotels

  • In this short clip taken from the 5-Star Conversation with Rodger Powell from THSA AustralAsia, we note the value and opportunities within the hospitality industry while advocating for a shift in the perception and treatment of staff. We reflect on the fact that hospitality graduates are highly sought after by luxury retail and car showrooms for their people-focused skills, underscoring the industry's potential. Reflecting on his nearly 50-year career, which began at age 12 washing dishes, he emphasises that success in hospitality comes from commitment and a genuine love for working with people. As technology reduces transactional tasks, this is as an opportunity for staff to shine, allowing their personalities to enhance true guest interactions and create memorable experiences. • In this short clip taken from the 5-Star Conversation with Rodger Powell from THSA AustralAsia, he shares a humorous and humbling story from his early hospitality days. Rodger recounts serving a lively group of guests at a bachelorette party and finding himself distracted during a silver-service coffee pour. Focused more on the guest than the task, he ended up overfilling the cup, the saucer, and spilling coffee onto the table—all to the amusement of the guests. Reflecting on the moment with good humour, Rodger reminds us that even the most cringeworthy experiences can become cherished stories that shape our hospitality journey.
