  • In the spirit of Mariah Carey, all we want for Christmas is you…to join the SIX app and start your ethical investing journey. Our gift to you: If you sign up to create a trading account before December 31st, you’ll receive your first trade for free (i.e. we’ll reimburse your broking fee) 🎁 It’s been a big year at SIX. We launched our trading platform. What started with just the ability to join shareholder activism campaigns in June, developed into a full share trading app by the end of October: https://lnkd.in/gaVT8FrS We haven’t stopped there: the SIX app is not just about being able to buy and sell shares, it’s about giving you the information you need to make investment decisions that align with your values. So we’ve been busy building out important features to help you do just that: ✅ Ethical profiles of the largest ASX-listed ETFs and shares ✅ Ethical tags to filter through companies ✅ Getting started with investing guides & how-tos Plus, now you can move shares you have on other platforms onto the SIX app. Check out the table below for a comparison between SIX and some of the other big share trading apps. If you’re keen to switch your investments over to us, follow this easy how-to guide: https://lnkd.in/g4snpfYv That's it from us for 2024, folks! Happy holidays from the team at SIX ☀️

Three multinational-owned companies exploit and pollute Macquarie Harbour while paying no taxes, backed by the foreign funded lobby group Salmon Tasmania, but somehow our group of 120+ Australian shareholders are ‘potentially affecting national sovereignty’ by trying to stop an extinction? Australia has some of the least democratic rules in the world when it comes to shareholder participation in the companies that we own. It is so difficult for shareholders to propose an advisory resolution in Australia that a single US company, Amazon, had 6 times as many shareholder resolutions in 2023 as the entire ASX. 100 shareholders working together isn’t a ‘loophole’, it’s an almost impossibly high benchmark required for one of the most basic of shareholder rights. There’s nothing sneaky about it, SIX has a mission to make the corporate world more democratic. It’s behind a paywall, so here’s my quotes from Summer Liu’s article in The Australian today. Link to the article is in the comments. “SIX co-founder and chief executive Adam Verwey said the laws were strict enough already, and any further restrictions would be “completely undemocratic” and endanger the safety of Australians. “If shareholders didn’t have the right to propose resolutions, then Johnson & Johnson would likely still be selling cancer-causing talc powders, and Dunkin’ Donuts would still be sprinkling titanium dioxide on their doughnuts,” he said. “(Salmon Tasmania) is a lobby group that is good at pretending they are representing Tasmanians while actually representing the financial interests of the three multinational companies that operate industrial salmon farms in Tasmania. “If you want to see who is profiting from the potential extinction of the Maugean skate, you should be looking at Coles, Woolworths, and the three multinational companies operating salmon farms in Macquarie Harbour.” Mr Verwey said Australia was more conservative on its shareholder resolution laws compared to “almost all Western countries”, which gave individual shareholders the right to propose an advisory resolution to a company’s annual general meeting. “Given this is so normal everywhere else in the world, why are Australian companies flipping out about the prospect of receiving an occasional shareholder resolution,” he said. A Treasury spokesman said that “through routine stakeholder engagement (we have) not heard concerns within the corporate community regarding the operation of other provisions with the 100-member rule”.” SIX (Sustainable Investment Exchange) Ekō Anisha Humphreys Kelly Roebuck Environment Tasmania Ethinvest Blair Palese Trevor Thomas Tas Ethical Ethical Investment Funds Management

  • This morning, Sophie Hall, James Alexander and Phoebe Rountree headed to the Premier Investments AGM to ask about paid parental leave (pictured!). Stay tuned for updates 👀 Inspired by SIX CEO Adam Verwey, our Campaigns Manager, Phoebe Rountree and Communications Manager Mariela Powell Thomas have written about their own share portfolios. As a first time share trader, Phoebe has focused on buying shares in companies that are targets of SIX’s shareholder activism campaigns. Her main investments? Woolworths and Coles for the Save the Skate campaign, and G8 Education for the paid parental leave campaign. You can read her full write up on the blog: https://lnkd.in/gYEHMaw9 Mariela was lucky enough to grow up with a financial advisor for a dad, so she's not totally new to the world of investing and has mainly built up her portfolio with ethical ETFs. She's become increasingly interested in high quality healthcare and has a couple of interesting healthcare companies on her watchlist, including one that’s getting into AI. You can read more details on the blog: https://lnkd.in/gm9kZAjT You can access the full ethical profiles of these companies on the SIX app: https://lnkd.in/gaVT8FrS And remember: what's right for us might not be right for you. Always do your own research or seek personal financial advice before investing to ensure you make decisions that are right for you.

I firmly believe in always making sure I'm learning new things 📚 For me lately, that new thing has been ethical investing. Along with my colleagues in the SIX (Sustainable Investment Exchange) team, I'm giving folks a peek into what my portfolio (fancy word for "collection of financial investments") looks like 🕵♀️ https://lnkd.in/g7HwFD3q I'm particularly hopeful that this piece is insightful for fellow activists who are exploring ways to use money as a lever for change 💙

  • Our team have been busy attending quite a few AGMs lately! 👀 See below an update from our ESG manager James Alexander about our PPL campaign and the experience of attending the AGM for Lovisa Holdings Ltd 👏 We are keeping the pressure on 💪 Phoebe Rountree Sophie Hall Adam Verwey

Employer funded parental leave for all parents, regardless of gender, in addition to the Government minimum is crucial for Australians to spend time with their new babies and close the gender pay gap 👶 Yet at SIX (Sustainable Investment Exchange) we found that jewellery retailer Lovisa Holdings Ltd is one of the largest employers on the ASX that is not providing its employees with paid parental leave (94% of them are women). Personally I can’t wait for my parental leave!! But without adequate PPL, women do the majority of unpaid care, including looking after newborns, which heavily reduces their career earnings. Lovisa is a laggard in this area - 75% of companies in female dominated industries provide employer-funded PPL, as do 85% of employers with more than 5000 staff. This is salt in the wound when Lovisa's investors voted against its exec salaries 2 years in a row, including its CEO's absurd $30 million compensation. The company’s products are marketed to women, and the retail industry is dominated by underpaid, overworked women - in short, Lovisa is hugely benefitting from women. If a company markets its products to women, it should create a workplace culture that incentivises women to work there and supports closing the gender pay gap (its GlassDoor reviews show it does the opposite https://lnkd.in/gd3qXQKy) PPL also improves a company's ability to retain and attract top talent in a market where it's becoming expected. So it should be good business. After Lovisa didn’t respond to our emails, Phoebe Rountree and I went to their Annual General Meeting last week to put this question to their Board of Directors. The company said they’ve increased their PPL policy in the past 6 months, but were cagey on the details. We’ll be keeping the pressure on them and will update you when we hear from them! Lovisa isn't the only big company failing to support their employees with paid parental leave. Childcare provider G8 Education Ltd is another big employer to not pay PPL (despite being a childcare provider!), and their AGM is early next year. For anyone wanting to support the campaign, check out the links in the comments👇 📽️ Linkedin loves videos, so here's my reflections on the AGM brought to you from a very comfy couch at their offices SIX (Sustainable Investment Exchange) Adam Verwey Phoebe Rountree Mariela Powell Thomas Sophie Hall Olivia Campbell

Over 20 years in ethical investment, I’ve shared plenty of opinions on what makes a company ethical—or not. Along the way, I’ve also had the privilege of helping shape where a lot of people’s super goes. But today, I’m pulling back the curtain on my own share portfolio -> https://lnkd.in/gwrSyXBg Spoiler alert: it’s heavy on ETFs, with a sprinkle of my favourite ethical companies. (Though I did leave out the surprise-inside confectionary company I’ve been raving about for years. I wouldn’t want to accidentally inspire an ill-advised sugar-fueled investment spree) The good news? You don’t need 20 years of experience to invest ethically on the ASX. SIX has made it simple with detailed ethical company profiles and filters for the values that matter to you. So if you’ve been waiting for a share trading app that is built for ethical investors, or just been waiting to ditch your expensive big bank broker, then give SIX a go. • This week while the world was holding space for the lyrics of Defying Gravity, we were putting together a Wicked guide for how to transfer your shares to SIX from other trading platforms – because breaking free and reaching new heights shouldn't just be for musicals. The trickiest part is that the process requires a wet signature (pen on paper), so make sure you have a friend or workplace with a printer on-hand!: https://lnkd.in/g4snpfYv ✅ What’s new in campaigns? With the Woolworths and Coles AGMs now in our rearview mirror, we’ve put together some insights on how shareholder resolutions can help drive campaign wins using the Save the Skate campaign as a case study. If you’ve been a bit unsure about what a 39% vote for a resolution means, or how resolutions fit into the bigger campaign picture, this is for you! Much like the Wizard of Oz, Woolies and Coles continue to discriminate against animals: https://lnkd.in/getwsFdM 🔭 In focus: Our ESG team has put a this guide on energy transmission minerals on the ASX. To avoid a climate catastrophe the world needs to get emissions as low as possible, which means no new fossil fuel projects and instead huge scaling up of low emissions technologies. This transition drives a surge in demand for critical minerals that are vital for these technologies. For us to avoid the mistakes of the past and allow everyone to prosper sustainably, materials for the energy transition should be extracted with the consent of communities, responsible business practices, and laws that safeguard people and the planet: https://lnkd.in/g26_Bsje
