For purpose. We provide haircuts, free of charge and free of judgement, to people experiencing homelessness and poverty.

About us

Short Back & Sidewalks is a free hair-cutting service for members of the community in need. We work alongside service providers across Australia, providing friendly and attentive hair-cutting experiences with some of Australia’s best hairdressers and barbers as our volunteers. Short Back & Sidewalks currently operates in Western Australia, New South Wales, the Northern Territory and Victoria. Our service goes beyond just giving free haircuts; we create meaningful connections through conversations with clients, and create visibility for some of the most marginalised community members in Australia.

  • Happy New Year! Our team is back in the office and looking forward to another year of cutting hair and creating connections. As we kick off 2025, we're reflecting on one of our proudest moments in 2024.  Not only was our founder Craig named AHIA Vidal Sassoon Humanitarian of the Year, Comfortel generously donated $10,000 to help us get closer to our goal of providing 15,000 free haircuts by 2025. A huge thank you to Comfortel Furniture and Mocha Media for your support, 2025 is shaping up to be a year of incredible impact for the Short Back & Sidewalks team.

  • Since May, Annemarie and her amazing team at Ahead of Time Beauty have been volunteering with Short Back & Sidewalks and M25, making an incredible impact in the Kalgoorlie community.  We spoke to Annemarie who told us "It has been such a privilege to be a part of and build connection and confidence. Thank you for allowing us to share the love and enjoy some laughter, great conversations, and some fab hairstyles." We love having her team as part of the Short Back & Sidewalks family.  A big thanks to Annemarie and her team.

  • 16 Days in WA is an important awareness campaign running from 25 November to 10 December encouraging a change in attitudes and behaviours to stop violence against women. This year’s theme is Play Your Part. Family and domestic violence is one of the leading causes of homelessness for women and children in Australia. Short Back & Sidewalks is playing our part by creating positive connections with those affected by family and domestic violence through our free haircutting services. Over the campaign period, we are running 8 services across the state where women and children will be present, including a special pamper day at the Stirling Women’s Refuge (Centre for Women's Safety and Wellbeing) and new service launches at Marnin Bowa Marnin Bowa Dumbara Derby Family Healing Centre and Albany Women's Refuge. We are proud to be playing our part. Learn more about this vital initiative here: https://lnkd.in/gkwJbh_j #16daysinWA

  • Thanks Property Council WA for recognising the impact of this pilot project with our partners Hawaiian. This was a truly impactful program for people living below or close to the poverty line, and with over 3.32 million Australians living below the poverty line - including children 1 in 6, this is a much needed program.

Congratulations to the Hawaiian team for winning the Best Diversity or Inclusion Initiative at the 2024 WA Property Awards! Hawaiian - along with their hair and grooming tenants across their network of Perth shopping centres - teamed with not-for-profit Short Back & Sidewalks to offer in-salon haircuts without judgement, for people living under or close to the poverty line. As a property company with a difference, Hawaiian is committed to the communities in which we operate, and they want to see people thrive. The six-week pilot program began with the aim of delivering 100 free haircuts to marginalised West Australians. The dedicated salon retailers sharpened their scissors and got to work to help those in their communities experiencing poverty and disadvantage, to help lift their self-confidence and raise self-esteem. And thank you to our partners for making the 2024 WA Property Awards possible: Major Partner EnergyTec Events Partners Ray White Commercial & Benchmark Finance Group Amy Gibbs Craig Hollywood Emily Fazari Ethan Dawson Harris Ntoumenopoulos Leah Royle Natalie Jenkins Nicolette Adams Rita Leone Sandra Holloway Sara Petersen Sarah Moore Scott Greenwood GAICD Shane Di Lello Simone Fielder Sophie Brinklow Travis Powell
