A Legal Legend Retires: Honoring Terry O'Gorman’s Incredible Legacy After nearly 50 years championing justice, Terry O'Gorman AM, one of Queensland’s most esteemed legal figures, is retiring from Robertson O'Gorman Solicitors. From his early advocacy with the Aboriginal Legal Service to co-founding Robertson O'Gorman in the 1970’s, Terry’s career is marked by an unwavering commitment to defending civil liberties and championing justice reform. Not only a formidable courtroom advocate, Terry has made immense pro bono contributions and shaped legal discourse through roles with the Queensland and Australian Council for Civil Liberties and the Queensland Law Society. His dedication was recognised with honors including the Order of Australia and the Law Council of Australia’s President’s Medal. His legacy is one of relentless pursuit of justice and protection of human rights. Even in retirement, Terry will focus on law reform, aiming to establish a National Criminal Cases Review Commission to address miscarriages of justice. We’re incredibly proud of his impact and excited to continue the mission he instilled in Robertson O'Gorman under the leadership of Dan Rogers and Emma Higgins. Thank you, Terry, for your lifetime of service. Your legacy will guide us always. QLS Modern Advocate Lecture Series Last night our Principal, Mr Dan Rogers chaired the final QLS Modern Advocate Lecture Series for 2024. Now in its 7th year, the Modern Advocate Lecture Series provides an opportunity for practitioners to hear from members of the judiciary and the profession who have shaped the legal advocacy landscape in a positive way. Last night’s speaker, His Honour Judge Horneman-Wren SC was no exception. Judge Horneman-Wren SC spoke about what exercising “good judgment” as a legal practitioner means. The importance of good judgement was canvassed across a range of environments including in the formulation of correspondence and Affidavits. Good judgment is also critical in client interactions and of course, when appearing as an advocate before a Court. His Honour received great feedback from the speech and an interesting ‘question and answer’ session followed. Of particular importance was the discussion with the attendees about taking time to pause and think when confronted with a difficult or challenging decision. His Honour’s focus on good judgment was also a good reminder of the fundamental ethical duties that solicitors owe to their clients, the Court and to the community. His Honour’s speech was recorded and will be available to all practitioners through the Queensland Law Society. We encourage those who were unable to attend to access and listen to his Honour’s speech. Doing so would constitute good judgement!
