Prostate Care was outside the newsagency at Bridgetown Blues fest yesterday, raising awareness around prostate cancer, connecting with people and selling raffle tickets to our raffle. Congrats to Mike (the Churros van guy) and Deb who took home first and second prize! We raised just over $900 from yesterday morning’s efforts. That’s money to support two families navigating prostate cancer! Thanks so much to everyone who bought tickets and donated! We couldn’t have reached this goal without you!
Although this conversation is happening around the NHS it raises the issue of PSA level testing and age. Similarly to the UK, Australian men below the age of 50 are not routinely tested. If the age limit is changed this may lead to men being treated unnecessarily or it could lead to men receiving a diagnosis that would otherwise have been left untreated. An opportunity to consider another way of connecting and living a fulfilling life. Early evidence from a recent study by The New England Journal of Medicine suggests stereotactic radiation is as effective but less invasive than traditional prostate cancer treatment options. For advanced prostate cancer, this therapy can also target distant disease, potentially delaying the need for hormone therapy or chemotherapy by rendering patients free of symptoms for 8 to 13 months.
A new at-home saliva test for prostate cancer, developed by researchers at the Institute of Cancer Research, is set to undergo a £2 million NHS trial. This test aims to enable earlier diagnoses, especially for Black men who have historically been excluded due to a lack of relevant genetic data. The saliva test has shown higher accuracy than the traditional PSA blood test and could help identify up to 12,350 additional cases annually. The study will recruit 1,000 men from diverse ethnic backgrounds, addressing previous biases in cancer research. Health officials view this as a significant advancement in equitable healthcare.
