Western Australia's home of contemporary arts.

About us

Housed in a large and striking heritage building in the heart of Perth, Western Australia, PICA is the city’s focal point for those wishing to experience the best of Australian and international visual, performance and interdisciplinary art. PICA is both a producing and presenting institution that runs a year round program of changing exhibitions, seasons in contemporary dance, theatre and performance and a range of interdisciplinary projects. It boasts one of the largest and most breath-taking exhibition spaces in Australia and has become known for the leading role it plays in the presentation of significant new work. PICA’s key aim is to promote, support and present contemporary arts and to stimulate critical discussion around the arts and broader cultural issues. Providing a site for experimentation, critical analysis, discussion and debate is fundamental to its charter. PICA is known for the rigour and breadth of its artistic and education programs, high production standards and impeccable presentation. In many aspects of its operations, PICA might be understood as an incubator: providing resources, mentoring and support for both emerging and mature artists whilst promoting new and emerging ideas, forms and practices to the broader community. PICA is an icon of contemporary thinking – it is a catalyst for innovative and ground breaking art and culture. Not constrained by convention, PICA gives artists and audiences a glimpse of what is possible.

Updates

  • We’ve got a new look! 💚   We’ve been working with Block Branding to reimagine PICA’s look, drawing inspiration from PICA’s history, its building and the artworks within.    Using the architecture of the building as a catalyst for our new identity, the design of PICA's new logo draws on the shapes and forms of the building's distinctive clock tower and iconic arches. Our new look also features familiar colours, from the difficult-to-miss red brick of the building's exterior to shades of green that can be found throughout PICA's history.

  • As we unveil our ambitious 2025 program, PICA continues to be a beacon of contemporary arts in WA—championing innovative ideas and diverse voices. With over 200 artists across exhibitions, performances and international collaborations, this program solidifies our role as a space for connection, critical dialogue and creative transformation. From the ground-breaking ‘Revealed: New and Emerging WA Aboriginal Artists’ to our Bunuru Season, celebrating matrilineal legacy and intergenerational storytelling. We are proud to challenge and inspire how our community sees the world. Join us as we amplify voices and shape the future of contemporary arts in WA. • Central to Mossy Jade’s artistic practice is her approach to world-building. Her performance and paintings serve as both an act of resistance and a celebration, representing both her own identity and the experiences of other transgender individuals. During her Quick Response Residency at PICA, Mossy Jade dove into physical research and experimentation to deepen the integration of her painting practice with performance. 'Love Letters' – an ode to Boorloo (Perth), consists of ten new works that speak deeply to place and feeling. Mossy caught up with PICA’s Marketing and Communications Coordinator, Kauri Minhinnick, to discuss the outcome of her residency, her background and the future ahead of her move to London. Read the full interview at https://lnkd.in/gtb4S6Qj Images: Mossy Jade, 'Love Letters', in-situ, Quick Response Residency, 2024, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA).
