"The challenge for incumbent governments will be to understand the drivers of Trumpism without succumbing to them. Anchoring a national discussion around the ideas of economic independence and the freedom to create sovereign online spaces would both harness and differentiate from the forces Trump has marshalled so effectively." We work to build a new vision for Australia based on fairness, shared prosperity, community, and social justice.
About us
Per Capita is an independent progressive think tank dedicated to building a new vision for Australia based on fairness, prosperity, community and social justice. Per Capita’s research is rigorous, evidence-based, and long-term in its outlook, considering the national challenges of the next decade rather than the next election cycle. We ask fresh questions and offer fresh answers, drawing on new thinking in science, economics and public policy. Our audience is the interested public, not just experts and practitioners. We engage all Australians who are keen to see the hard thinking done on the country’s future.

It's been almost 15 years since Australia's Future Tax System Report, the Henry Review, was published. The key findings of that 'root and branch' review of our tax system showed there was a lot to do. However, it demonstrated key areas of focus and benefits for all of Australian society for a Government prepared to take leadership and put a comprehensive plan in place. Unfortunately, we've been lacking such a government. Next year's federal election is shaping up to be a once-in-a-generation opportunity for a government elected with a mandate for tax reform. Because the consensus about the need for reform is there - across business, community, and economic sectors. We need to make sure both major parties, the minor parties, and independent candidates hear the message loud and clear that we can't solve society's problems without tax reform. That's why Prosper is proudly putting our name to the Community Tax Summit 2025, organised by Per Capita Australia. And we're thrilled Dr Ken Henry will be delivering the opening address. The Summit aims to put everything on the table. Because this is the debate Australia has to have, and we need the next government to commit to tax reform in the next term. Tickets are on sale now. See you there. https://lnkd.in/gDqpjTJb

Per Capita is bringing together leading experts, community advocates, policy makers and the Australian people to kick off a big, national conversation about meaningful tax and transfer system reform. There is broad agreement among economists, social security experts, business leaders and the community sector that Australia’s tax and transfer system needs structural reform. Yet we are told repeatedly that the restructure needed is “too politically difficult” to be attempted. Ahead of the 2025 federal election, Per Capita and partners will demonstrate that the community has the appetite for this “big conversation”, and show that a genuine, everything-on-the-table approach to tax and transfer reform is both needed and wanted in the next term of Parliament. Join us to kick off the big conversation Australia desperately needs to have. With MYEFO out today, showing huge revenue shortfalls in the decades ahead, and Treasury's release of its annual Tax Expenditures and Insights Statement overnight showing the cost of various tax concessions to our Commonwealth, there couldn't be a better time to announce the 2025 Community Tax Summit! I'm delighted that Per Capita will be joined by so many important community, non-profit and social services organisations to kick off the big conversation we need to have: about what kind of country we want to leave our kids, and how we can fund it fairly and sustainably. The Summit is on sale now, and there is both a limited number of in-person tickets, and a virtually unlimited number of online tickets available, the latter including full interactive participation thanks to our friends at Essential. There will also be some free tickets available for those who would otherwise be unable to attend, thanks to our generous sponsors. Keynote speakers include Ken Henry AC, Katherine Trebeck and Miranda Stewart, with more to be announced in coming days. You'll also hear from experts at our partner organisations, including Think Forward, Brotherhood of St Laurence, Oxfam Australia, Tax Justice Network, Prosper Australia, ACOSS Australian Council of Social Service, The Next Economy, Anglicare Australia and more. And, most importantly, we will hear from you, and many other Australians who want to work together to build a better future. Please join us for the Community Tax Summit 2025. https://lnkd.in/guj86bHz Peter Lewis Thomas Walker Katherine Trebeck Travers McLeod Nicole Bieske Rayna Fahey Tim Helm Cassandra Goldie AO Peter Davidson Amanda Cahill Maiy Azize Josie Lee Helen Hodgson Chris Black (GAICD) Harriet McCallum Stephen Torsi Rachel Ball Tracey Martinovich
