  • MM Defence is proudly part of the Supply Chain for Naval Sustainment across Australia. The Hobart class destroyers are just one of the many platforms MM Defence provides a wide variety of products to support. Reach out to the team to see how we can support your supply chain.

Australia’s Hobart class destroyers and future Hunter class frigates will be armed with SM-2 and SM-6 missiles, under a new $7 billion Australian Government deal with the United States. The Standard Missile 2 Block IIIC (SM-2 IIIC)  and Standard Missile‑6 (SM-6) are billed as the most advanced air and missile defence weapons in the world. The SM-2 IIIC brings active seeker technology and significantly enhanced defensive capabilities against missile threats. The SM-6 missile will provide Australia with extended range air defence capability against air and missile threats, an offensive anti-ship capability and for the first time, a terminal ballistic missile defence capability. The SM-2 IIIC and SM-6 complement existing capabilities such as ESSM Block 2 and Naval Strike Missile as part of a layered strike and missile defence capability for the Royal Australian Navy surface combatant fleet. “The Standard Missile‑6 and Standard Missile 2 Block IIIC will enable our Navy to strike maritime, land and air targets at long-range, and provide a terminal ballistic missile defence capability, boosting the capacity for the ADF to safeguard Australians and their interests,” said Australian Minister for Defence, Richard Marles. HMAS Sydney conducted a successful first-of-class firing of the Naval Strike Missile during Exercise RIMPAC in July and the SM-6 as part of Exercise Pacific Dragon 2024 near Hawaii in August. • Did you know that MM Defence is providing both local & global sourcing solutions to support a Sovereign Australian Supply Chain for HMAS Sydney and many other vessels within the Royal Australian Navy. Reach out to see how we can assist in supporting your supply chain needs now.

International resolve for Indo-Pacific maritime security was on show recently when Royal Australian Navy Hobart-class Guided Missile Destroyer (DDG) HMAS Sydney joined with allies and regional partners in the Yellow Sea to conduct cooperative activities during Operation Argos. Sydney received a replenishment at sea (RAS) and a vertical replenishment from German Navy’s FGS Frankfurt am Main while Royal New Zealand Navy HMNZS Aotearoa provided fuel to FGS Baden-Wurttemberg. The ships also conducted officer-of-the-watch manoeuvres including a 'formation foxtrot'. During this manoeuvre, the task group ships reverse their order in a column. Starting from the back, each ship pulls out to port (left) or starboard (right) as directed and speeds up to pass the lead ship. Commanding Officer Sydney Commander Grant Coleman said getting to work with other nations during Operation Argos enhanced effectiveness, cooperation and helped build relationships with like-minded partners. "HMAS Sydney is in the region as part of Operation Argos to enforce United Nations Security Council sanctions against North Korea,” Commander Coleman said. “It's good to be working with the German Navy and New Zealand Navy again after our recent interactions during RIMPAC and other cooperative activities.   “It's another valuable opportunity to demonstrate to ourselves and others how our respective navies can easily integrate when working in a common framework.” Image courtesy of Defence.
