About us

Merri Creek Management Committee works to preserve the natural and cultural heritage of the Merri Creek and tributaries, their corridors and associated ecological communities. We conduct ecologically sensitive restoration, development and maintenance works, and engage the local community in restoration and citizen science activities. We acknowledge that the Merri Creek flows through the cultural landscape of the Wurundjeri and that recognition, reconciliation and engagement with Aboriginal people is necessary to undertake our works along the creek and with the community.

Updates

  • As 2024 comes to an end, the team at MCMC sends a huge thanks to all our supporters for your ongoing support of our work this year. With your help, we’ve worked with many thousands of people up and down the length of the Merri Creek, continuing to protect, restore, repair, and engage. This year has seen MCMC undergo many changes internally, as we farewelled a number of long-term staff but the one constant has been the support we receive from our Merri Creek family. We know our environment is under pressure – politically, economically through a lack of funding, and from the impacts of climate change – but our precious urban oasis has also continued to be a source of joy for so many in our community. It’s a quiet refuge, an outdoor classroom, an exercise room, and a home to our non-human friends. This year we renewed our focus on the Growling Grass Frog, raising funds, finalising our GGF strategy, and initiating monitoring programs – and we are excited to report that we’ve been recording GGF growls and taking some great photos at a number of sites. Our team has continued to grow on the back of a number of successful grant applications and large projects. We hope you have a restful festive season (on or off the creek), and we look forward to seeing you again, on the creek, in 2025 💚

  • Nanks Nicole Kowalczyk for such a neat overview of our meeting with Ministers Harriet Shing and Steve Dimopoulos and our supportive MPs. Our urban waterways are the lifeblood of our communities, and we need all hands on deck to protect and restore them for their intrinsic value and for the value they hold to our communities.

Earlier this week representatives from the Urban Waterways Alliance (UWA)—including the Darebin Creek Management Committee Inc, Merri Creek Management Committee, Yarra Riverkeeper Association, and Maribyrnong River and Waterways Association had the opportunity to meet with Water Minister Harriet Shing, Environment Minister Steve Dimopoulos, and several MPs, including Kat Theophanous MP, Anthony Cianflone MP, and Katie Hall. This meeting allowed us to emphasise the critical role the UWA plays in safeguarding Melbourne’s waterways. We also discussed the importance of flexibility in government grant funding, which would enable us to strengthen partnerships, expand fundraising capacity, and deliver on strategies aligned with state water policy. It was also a great opportunity to reflect on a few of our key concerns for urban waterways: 1. Permanent Significant Landscape Overlays: We highlighted the need to make interim Significant Landscape Overlays permanent along key rivers and creeks in Melbourne, safeguarding these vital river corridors as climate refuges for both people and wildlife. At this time, SLO controls introduced by amendment VC201 are in place on an interim basis until 31 December 2026 (for more info see bit.ly/4eawjoQ) 2. Balancing Housing Growth with Green Space: With Melbourne projected to add 800,000 new dwellings over the next decade, it’s crucial to maintain accessible green spaces, particularly near waterways, to ensure community well-being and environmental resilience. Prioritising the preservation and enhancement of green spaces around waterways will help keep Melbourne liveable as density increases (https://bit.ly/4f353Kk). 3.Mandatory Stormwater Targets in Planning: To achieve the EPA’s 2021 stormwater flow reduction targets, it’s essential to incorporate these targets as mandatory standards within the Victoria Planning Provisions (VPPs). This step would ensure consistent, enforceable standards across Greater Melbourne, enabling councils and developers to proactively manage stormwater, protect waterways, and reduce flood risks as the city grows. • Last week MCMC staff had a field trip, visiting Green Hill, Dolomite Rise, and Kalkallo Grasslands, all in the northern reaches of the Merri catchment. We were led by our in-house and Merri Creek family of experts - Rob Eldridge, Chris Cobern, Paul Piko, and Michael Longmore. Rob discussed the proposed development in the Hearnes Swamp area and marvelled at the volcanic cones (including my favourite, Mt Fraser), and the community's hopes for a wallan wallan regional parklands. Paul led us through the forest looking for orchids; and Michael took us on a tour of the Kalkallo Grasslands and cemetery, looking for Bush Peas and other delightful species. During our lunch break we farewelled Luisa Macmillan, the former Manager at MCMC. Luisa's leadership, advocacy, and care for the environment and people were recognised by the team. Luisa, we hope to see you back on the Creek very soon! Enjoy the photos - and happy to take guesses about species in the comments!
