Macquarie University Clinical Trials Unit

We received a beautiful summary of trial results written in very easily understandable language to provide to the patients that participated in our clinical trial. We have over 200 trials ongoing. Despite all the rhetoric this is the first time I have see this happen. Bravo Boehringer Ingelheim! I hope this becomes an industry standard.

On Saturday 25th May, the CTU took part in Run For Tom, a fundraiser organised by one of our senior trial coordinators, Harrison O’Brien, to raise money for two amazing charities, Feel The Magic and Winston’s Wish, in memory of his brother Tom. Tom passed away in January 2023 after a long battle with ocular melanoma and leaves behind his wife and two young children. Harrison took on the challenge of running the 80km Bondi to Manly coastal run and was supported by some of our incredible team along the way. However, the premise of Run For Tom was for as many people as possible to get outside for a run or a walk on that day in memory of Harrison’s brother Tom. It was fantastic to see so many members of our amazing CTU and their families supporting this effort with their own run or walk in memory of Tom. The Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences at Macquarie University presents awards to staff members a couple of times a year. This week the CTU was very well represented in the nominations, and our fabulous Head of Phase I Oncology portfolio, Dr JOHN PARK, won one of the awards. With his passion, drive and enthusiasm, the Macquarie phase I portfolio has grown from 1 new trial 5 years ago to more than 20 this year and recruitment to those trials routinely sets us among the best sites in the world. It is very motivating to work beside someone who moves science forward through his dedication to finding treatment options for his patients.

We are recruiting for a number of brand new roles to support our always growing CTU. The first of these is a Clinical Trials Training Manager. This position will develop training programs to meet training needs for staff working in all aspects of clinical trials, and will be pivotal in supporting our state of the art Clinical Trial trainee program. First participant in the world! Macquarie University Clinical Trials Unit has started supporting haematology trials in the last 12 months. One such trial is the AstraZeneca's phase II trial of Acalabrutinib with Venetoclax and Rituximab in participants with treatment naïve mantle cell lymphoma (TrAVeRse). Principal Investigator Monique Menzies Wojtowicz (pictured below) with the fabulous MQ CTU team started treatment for the first patient in the world last week. I am so proud of our clinical team and our start up team for facilitating such a milestone.
