Christmas is a time we spend time with our extended family, which can come with its fair share of tricky moments. I recently joined Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons to talk about handling conflict during Christmas gatherings. I shared tips and ideas on how to approach challenging conversations, set boundaries, and keep things calm during the festive season. If you’re wondering how to make the holidays a little smoother this year, have a listen to our chat. Connecting as a family can be hard as everyone is so busy (including the kids) there is so much going on. Especially at this time of the year. Family time doesn’t always have to look perfect though—it’s about creating moments to connect in ways that work for you. For my family, sitting down for dinner together is one of those important times. Even when it is a short dinner and someone has to go to an activity after or before. We don’t do it every night, but we make it a priority as much as possible as I know the difference it makes to us and that it does not work for us if we don't. Having dinner together is a chance for us to talk about our day, share stories, laugh, and even negotiate when needed. This simple routine keeps us grounded and connected, and it’s something I grew up valuing in my own family. Whether it’s a weekly movie night, a regular walk in the park with the dogs, a shared meal or having a great chat in the car on the way to training, make sure you work in time to connect with your family in whatever way works for you all. When you are connected and know what is going on for everyone, you will find that communication improves and conflict is resolved and is prevented or resolved easily. I love to hear what you do with your family to connect. #FamilyConnection #FamilyTimeMatters #ParentingGoals #FamilyMoments

A skilled mediator is attuned to body language, pauses, and gestures and is not just focusing on what people are saying. Sometimes a client might say yes I would like to do this but you can see that they are very uncomfortable and the answer they want to give you might be actually no. Being able to read these nonverbal cues is key in supporting clients as they go through difficult conversations. When you see this happen, you can ask a client and say: You are telling me that you agree but you look very uncomfortable, am I right in saying that? This opens up a conversation so you can talk to your client about what is going on and if they want to make this agreement or are not sure, for example. Make sure that you do not make assumptions when you think you can read someone. Check in with the client to make sure you are right. Christmas can be a special time, but it often brings extra layers of complexity when extended family is involved. For co-parents, balancing your family’s traditions, the other parent’s traditions, and what’s best for the kids is no easy task. Talking about it, managing expectations and making agreements as early as possible early can reduce or eliminate conflict so you can all enjoy the festive season and not dread it. Don't forget, your kids will remember the joy and the experience not the date that they did it on necessarily. Ask your extended family to be flexible and work with you if they can as it can be impossible and stressful to do everything on Christmas Day. We're still open to welcome new clients for mediation before the Christmas break!
