Fantastic evening at The University of Melbourne Alumni Event in Sydney KomplyAi was invited to dive deep into the transformative world of AI and its impact on business. The energy in the room was really great. Particularly during a revealing moment captured in this photo - when I asked how many organisations were firstly aware of and secondly prepared for the Federal Governments recently released "Australian AI Safety Standards" ... or had knowledge of the impact of the seminal EU AI regulations on their Australian businesses. The response reflective of my general observations in market - we've got some work ahead of us as we approach 2025! The discussions were eye-opening, highlighting both the immense opportunities and critical compliance challenges facing Australian businesses. What stood out was the genuine appetite for understanding how to implement AI responsibly while creating value in large enterprise settings. Key takeaways: ✅ 2025 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for AI governance ✅ Workforce AI upskilling is no longer optional - it's critical ✅ Australian businesses are actively preparing for new AI regulations ✅ Cross-border compliance is becoming increasingly important Looking forward to continuing these conversations. A stellar lineup of speakers made this event truly special: Prof Andrew John (Melbourne Business School) Adam Whybrew (BCG) Kitty Lo (Allianz) Danielle Malone (Accenture) Special thanks to Selwyn D'Souza and Melbourne Business School, Visagio for hosting this important discussion. #AI #BusinessInnovation #MelbourneBusinessSchool #Leadership #FutureOfWork #AIRegulation #ResponsibleAI #UniMelb

A powerful morning in Melbourne with Professor Jeannie Marie Paterson University of Melbourne for “Women in AI, the Law, Regulation and Policy”. There was something deeply meaningful about discussing the future of women in AI on the site of the former Royal Women's Hospital. As we shared breakfast and stories under 'Chatham House Rules', it struck me how this place - once where new life began - is helping to shape the next generation of technology leadership. The business case is clear: diverse teams deliver better commercial results. Yet seeing brilliant female lawyers, technologists, and students share their journeys reminded me this isn't just about statistics - it's about unlocking real potential and creating better AI solutions for everyone. What excited me most? The electric energy when law firm partners, tech founders, policy makers and younger law and science students connect. Some of the students attending reminded us of the importance of being visible and present to support their future journeys. These are the conversations that will transform our industry! KomplyAi, we're committed to turning these sorts of events into action with our own role in the AI ecosystem – our expertise and technology. We look forward to supporting the exceptional Jeannie Marie Paterson and her team on initiatives to support women in AI leadership – and upskilling in new AI skill sets. Diverse voices forming part of the AI life cycle creates stronger, more innovative tech solutions. That's a win for everyone.

After a somewhat wet start to the week, the sun was out in full force as we showcased the six finalists of our #Xccelerate24 program at Commonwealth Bank‘s larger-than-life #SXSWSydney padlock space 🔒 A big thanks to Dragonfly Thinking, KomplyAi, Eidiex 🛡️ and GoFIGR for joining us for a chat, and to our friends at CommBank for coming by to support. But Xccelerate wasn’t all we got up to at SXSW Sydney… We also loaned out our MD Toby Norton-Smith to judge the Innovation and Retail Commerce category at SXSW Sydney Pitch; and our Portfolio Director Laura Faulconer moderated a panel on emerging AI alongside CBA Chief AI Officer Dan Jermyn, Agne Makauskaite from Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Bill Simpson-Young from Gradient Institute. Rounding out the week, umbrella at bay, Yish Koh took to the Discover Stage to speak about Kit’s mission to help build financial literacy in the next generation. Hopefully the forecast is looking bright ☀️ Thanks to SXSW Sydney for drenching us, drying us, hosting us, and (of course) inspiring us. Until the next time!

🌪️ SXSW Sydney: A Whirlwind of Innovation and Debate! 🌟 What a day yesterday at SXSW Sydney for KomplyAi. We first showcased our mission at the Commonwealth Bank x15ventures hub, sparking crucial conversations about responsible AI innovation in banking. Thank you Toby Norton-Smith for the great Q&A: Why did I build KomplyAi? To address the real challenges businesses now face in boldly innovating while ensuring robust AI safeguards. We're providing the essential technology to make this possible, enabling organizations to build, procure and deploy the broadest AI applications that better enhance customer and employee lives. Next off to the SXSW Sydney main "Discovery Stage" heading up the Affirmative Team debate on "Should Australia be a leader in AI?". It was electric! Huge thanks to the National AI Centre Australian Government for the invitation. Alongside brilliant minds like Nicholas Davis, Erika L., Jamie van Leeuwen, David McKeague, and Kate Bower, moderated by Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) veteran, Ange Lavoipierre we explored Australia's AI future. A key observation of market now: those businesses leaning most into AI innovation, (CBA now in the top 5 of the 2024 Evident AI Index), understand the critical importance of safety and customer responsibility. It's not just about leading; it's about leading responsibly. With Government support for AI innovation on full display, SXSW Sydney showcased the newly introduced Australian AI Safety Standards - 10 Guardrails. We've been working behind the scenes on something big (more to come!) in these Standards. #AIInnovation #ResponsibleAI #KomplyAi #SXSWSydney #AustralianTech #CustomerFirst Thanks for the fun Rita Arrigo, always a ball of energy and support for the AI ecosystem. Well done!

Another Landmark Day for AI in Australia. This time in Australian Education! The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Employment, Education, and Training has released what I would describe as a groundbreaking report with 25 Key Recommendations on generative AI in the Australian education system. As KomplyAi founder, I'm honoured to have contributed as an expert witness to this crucial Government Inquiry. Our mission to advocate for safer AI technology and help to ready and upskill our children, and current and future workforces, for these significant technology changes, has taken a major step forward. Key Recommendations Aligned with KomplyAi's Testimony: National Priority: Making GenAI in education a national focus, investing in AI upskilling and research and development, and ensuring that we are not left behind in the AI innovation stakes Safeguards: Creating robust protections for all users, especially vulnerable minors where we don’t yet have data about potential negative impact EdTech Regulation: Implementing a risk-based framework for EdTech companies Bias Mitigation: Addressing algorithmic bias and misinformation Risk Assessment: Identifying and tackling unacceptable risks in AI education tools During the Inquiry, I shared a personal anecdote, not as a technologist or lawyer but as a mother: "While exploring an AI image generator with my 9-year-old daughter, we discovered stark gender bias. When prompted for 'kids soccer team having fun,' it only produced images of boys playing - Her face washed with worry. 'Where are all the girls, Mum?' Amongst other Recommendations focusing on creating safer AI, and reducing bias, Recommendation 11, specifically requires EdTech companies to provide a Gender Impact Assessment to be completed. As I stated in my testimony: "As we explore generative AI in education, I challenge the Government to ensure that it's thinking about changes in education - better prepare us for rapid and fast-paced tech changes that will be unlike any we've seen before." The Committee's work and Recommendations reflect this sentiment. These Recommendations along with the latest Australian “AI Safety Standards” and proposed new AI laws represent a significant shift and changes for the Australian AI ecosystem. KomplyAi is here to support organisations as they move to alignment with these new Standards and Recommendations. #AIinEducation #AustralianEducation #ResponsibleAI #EdTech #KomplyAi

In my decades as a former IP litigator and in-house legal counsel, I've witnessed the evolving challenges enterprises face in managing risk and compliance. Now at KomplyAi, I see these challenges amplified in the AI space and bring that knowledge to solve a really hard problem. The complexity is striking. Enterprises are navigating a web of AI regulations that intersect with existing frameworks for hardware, software, and open-source tech management. Risk profiles vary significantly across sectors, activity types intersecting with AI, and AI applications, adding another layer of complexity. Integrating AI governance into mature disparate global regimes like data privacy, cybersecurity, export control, and IP protection is a key challenge. It's not just about reading up on new AI laws and adding that to your checklist; it's about implementing change in complex environments with established processes, board dates, budget lines, and long global product roadmaps. Practical considerations often get overlooked - like ensuring your engineers understand from the first moment they meet in a new "AI product scrum" that they are not building something illegal, or that they factor in the right infrastructure, to meet new global certification requirements for overseas markets, to avoid costly retrofitting. Procurement teams understanding the right contractual requirements to include now for long term 'Master Services Agreements', for instance, real-time monitoring and reporting obligations from suppliers, in critical infrastructure supply chains. At KomplyAi, we have lived in the trenches with our customers, we're focused on these nuanced challenges, looking at how different stakeholders - from board members to engineers, legal teams to procurement specialists - are influenced by organizational cultures and pressures to demonstrate ROI in AI. We've learned that a diverse mindset and team are crucial. Marrying legal expertise with AI knowledge provides the holistic view needed to navigate this landscape effectively. Without a deep appreciation of the full risk environment and competing regulatory requirements, it's impossible to anticipate the legal challenges of AI. The reality is you can't move a titanic overnight. Readiness is key, and iterative change is important. Innovative technology and human upskilling will certainly play a pivotal role in ensuring AI governance and risk management are done well in enterprise settings. At KomplyAi, we're committed to pushing the innovation envelope, continuously evolving our approach to support responsible AI deployment in the enterprise world. It's a fascinating time to be in this space, and I'm excited to see how we can contribute to shaping the future of AI governance. Thank you MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) for inspiring us.

ICYMI: Based on decades of legal experience and data gathered on AI-related laws and standards, MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) Startup Connect Plus member KomplyAi aims to support small businesses, large organizations, and governments as they bring about a safe and trustworthy AI-powered world. According to KomplyAi founder Kristen Migliorini, “the connection to MIT and to researchers through the startup program was really quite pivotal because it either developed or firmed up my research on some really complex and cutting-edge issues.” In her mind, combining the skillsets of academic researchers, industry professionals, and compliance backgrounds such as her own to create a commercial product is crucial because “we won’t solve these novel challenges with a singular mindset. We need the lawyers, academics, ethicists, large technology companies, and ultimately, the ‘doers,’ coming together.” Learn more about how KomplyAi connects with CSAIL Alliances: https://bit.ly/3PddTL8
