  • A space of their own A yarning circle has been established at the Unit 18 youth detention centre to host cultural activities and programs for young people. The move follows the opening of a cultural ground at the Banksia Hill Detention Centre earlier this year. The yarning circle was opened with a Welcome to Country, smoking ceremony and traditional dancing before detainees and representatives of the community and independent agencies. “I think it’s important to give them their own space, whether it be at Unit 18 or Banksia Hill, where they can sit and share stories and see their own journey,” Corrective Services Commissioner Brad Royce says.

  • Lovely leftovers   Karnet Prison Farm Chef Supervisor Tony and his charges had a big day in the kitchen yesterday serving up a Christmas buffet for the prisoners.   Like the rest of us post-Christmas, he’s got some leftovers to repurpose for the Karnet dining room.   Drawing on his days as a hotel chef, Tony has some trusted dishes to use up that surplus turkey, ham and chicken.   So, courtesy of the Karnet kitchen, here’s a few of those recipes to please the whole family.   Happy holidays!

  • 🎄 Karnet Christmas spirit on display 🎄   The men at Karnet Prison Farm have showcased their creativity to bring holiday cheer to the estate, where more than 150 family members and children will be greeted by festive displays in the fields when they arrive for the Karnet Family Christmas Party.   Using haybales as decorations, the display not only captures the spirit of the season, but of the working farm which plays a vital role in rehabilitating minimum-security prisoners by providing them with meaningful work and training, while supplying essential produce including milk, eggs, and fresh fruits and vegetables to prisons across the State. The colourful creations are a testament the community spirit and positive contributions of the men at Karnet, bringing cheer to all who visit.   From everyone at Department of Justice, we wish you all a happy and safe festive season.
