McKinsey and Co's latest report shows the importance of copper across all industrial sectors associated with decarbonisation of our future energy supply
#CleanIndustrialDeal : which sectors are strategic for the EU? A key question during the hearing of Executive Vice-President-designate Stéphane Séjourné yesterday, and the next key battle for every industrial sector who wants to be recognised and supported. What has been mentioned? #steel #aluminium #chemistry #cleantechnologies #automotive #aeronautic #heatpumps #solar #wind #electrolysers #cables #batteries What is missing? #copper #copper #copper and other non-ferrous #metals such as #zinc and #nickel Is it too obvious? Somehow yes, copper is listed as strategic by the Critical Raw Materials Act (#CRMA) and is necessary across all #energytransition technologies, like steel and aluminium as nicely illustrated in the chart from McKinsey & Company below (based on analysis from the European Commission and the International Energy Agency (IEA)), but we must remind it constantly : COPPER IS STRATEGIC! Mr Séjourné said "without steel no wind turbines, no railways, no buildings". The same easily applies to copper. Without copper, no #windturbines, no #electricity, no #EVs, no #motors, no #heatpumps... the list is long! An EU Steel Action Plan is strongly promoted #steelplan4europe, let's remind that Ursula von der Leyen promised a "Steel and Metals Action Plan". Would measures supporting the steel sector automatically support other metals value chains, such as #copper? Is there a risk that the focus on saving the steel sector would leave non-ferrous metals aside? Please share your thoughts. My conviction: the Clean Industrial Deal must look at strategic net zero value chains from the #mines to the clean technologies.
