Why are regulations failing us in the fight to end homelessness? Housing All Australians national tour, 'Homelessness Is A Housing Problem' brought together key leaders in the housing community to reshape the national conversation on housing and homelessness. Here, keynote speaker, Professor Gregg Colburn (University of Washington) discusses the tipping point in the US and turns a mirror to us. Catalysing the private sector to accelerate housing for those on very low incomes
About us
Housing All Australians is a private sector group using a commercial lens to help address Australia’s chronic shortage of low-income affordable housing. Bring your voice, networks, goods or services to help vulnerable Australians. Together, we can make a difference. Housing All Australians (HAA) was established in 2019 as a ‘for purpose’ organisation, to facilitate a private sector voice, and re-position the discussion and action on social and affordable housing for those on low to very low incomes. Our commercial lens is like no other charity in this space. We are a group of private sector individuals and corporates with a shared vision that it is in Australia’s long term economic interest to house all Australians, including those on low incomes. Unless we do, we will be leaving a significant burden for future generations, with disastrous economic and social consequences. We are classified as a Public Benevolent Institution with full tax deductibility benefits. Australia’s chronic shortage of affordable, social and public housing is set to create an intergenerational time bomb.

“Like food waste, leaving buildings unused is a societal waste we must address. This is more than just a policy—it’s a catalyst for meaningful change. This is a practical, common-sense solution. In a housing crisis, we can’t afford to let buildings sit empty while people are sleeping rough or experiencing severe housing stress" -- Adrian Harrington chair of HAA’s NSW management committee. https://hubs.ly/Q02_Tr-c0

🏠 Exciting news! We're thrilled to announce Dan McKenna will be joining Housing All Australians as our inaugural Chief Executive Officer in 2025. Dan joins us following an outstanding tenure at Nightingale Housing where he transformed innovative housing concepts into nationally recognised development models. His successful implementation of HAA's Progressive Residential Affordability Development Solution (PRADS) model at Nightingale – which increased affordable housing from 5% to 15% while maintaining project viability – demonstrates his ability to deliver practical solutions to Australia's housing crisis. "The housing affordability crisis demands innovative solutions that bring together diverse stakeholders across sectors," says Dan. "Having implemented the PRADS model at Nightingale and been across the evolution of the PRADS register which has garnered full industry support, I've seen firsthand how an innovation like PRADS can unlock affordable essential worker housing, at scale." Under Dan's leadership, HAA will focus on: • Creating transitional housing in unused empty buildings across Australia with our compassionate capitalists • Securing donated goods and services from value-aligned organisations • Scaling the PRADS model nationally through local government collaboration • Implementing the PRADS register with PEXA and REA Group • Engaging the entire property ecosystem in Australia's housing solutions With an additional one million social and affordable homes needed by 2041, we're excited to have Dan lead HAA into its next phase of growth and impact. Critical reforms to drive the changes we need. “In a housing crisis, we can’t afford to let buildings sit empty while people are sleeping rough or experiencing severe housing stress,” Housing All Australians NSW management committee chair Adrian Harrington said it was a practical solution to property waste. Empty buildings awaiting development can now be rapidly converted into temporary housing under new planning reforms announced by the NSW Government, eliminating months of bureaucratic delays for property owners. The reforms address a significant inefficiency in the property sector, where buildings often remain vacant for years during the development application process. Current approval times in Sydney average more than 100 days, with additional delays from utility providers and other agencies frequently extending project timelines. PRADS, our digital platform that can unlock private sector investment in sorely-needed essential worker housing, is gaining industry support, as governments continue to struggle with the size and scope of Australia’s housing crisis. Housing All Australians (HAA), in collaboration with PEXA, has engineered Australia’s first digital essential worker housing register, which integrates with HAA’s Progressive Residential Affordability Development Solution (PRADS). As of July this year, PRADS is now searchable on https://hubs.ly/Q02_TqXK0 for essential workers. “We’ve just made a national definition for essential worker housing that the governments can’t do,” Robert Pradolin GAICD, a former Frasers Property Australia general manager and the co-founder and director of HAA, told Australian Property Journal https://hubs.ly/Q02_TqT00

Tasmanian parliament demonstrates bipartisanship. In August this year, Labor MP Ella Haddad joined Housing Minister Felix Ellis MP and Shadow Housing Minister Shane Broad to host a screening of "Under Cover" -- the powerful documentary now on Netflix. It’s about women over 50 becoming Australia's fastest-growing cohort of homeless in Australia. What's significant wasn't just the content of the film but seeing parliamentarians from every side of the chamber coming together to understand this critical issue. This is how our democracy should work - setting aside political differences when it comes to helping our most vulnerable citizens. The follows the stories of nine women who never imagined they would face homelessness. Their experiences highlight how our broken housing system needs immediate attention - not political point-scoring. Housing All Australians are heartened to see our political leaders demonstrating that some issues transcend party lines. This is the kind of leadership Australians expect and deserve. True solutions to our housing crisis will only come when government, business, and community organisations work together. Tasmania's parliamentarians are showing us how it's done.
