AMS and RF IC Layout Design Expertise Over a Decade | Co-Founder at Fusion Semiconductor

Simple Tips for Success in Analog Layout Design A few engineers have asked me for advice on analog layout. Here are some simple and helpful tips to guide you: 1. Understand the Circuit -Learn how the circuit works, focusing on critical devices and signals -Talk to the project lead or circuit designer if you’re unsure about critical parts of the design 2. Floorplanning and Placement -Place critical devices first and prioritize their arrangement -Use matching techniques like common centroid or inter-digitization for better performance -Consider layout dependent effects (like well proximity, stress impacts, and LOD) when planning 3. Pre-route DRC/LatchUp(LU) Clean -Run DRC and LU to ensure the layout meets basic rules before starting routing -Review your floorplan with the project lead or designer to confirm everything is correct 4. Layout Drawing -Route connections carefully, focusing on critical devices and signals -Avoid unnecessary crossings and keep spacing clean to reduce parasitics -Use symmetry and matching for sensitive devices to improve performance 5. Verification Checklist -Ask for a checklist of block-level checks from the project lead or circuit designer -Run all the required checks early to avoid issues later 🔹Key Things to Consider 1. Long-width Devices -Check the best way to handle fingering and multipliers for wide devices -Follow the process and designer preferences 2. Well Proximity Effects (WPE) -Consider how WPE impacts device behavior in the given technology 3. Metal Routing Plan -Plan your signal and power routing early to avoid congestion later 4. Interconnects and Devices -Avoid routing over sensitive devices 5. Power Planning -Ensure power lines are wide enough to handle current -Plan power distribution during placement 🔹Additional Tips -Regularly discuss changes and ideas with the design team -Get feedback from experienced engineers to improve -Keep clear notes on layout decisions to avoid confusion in the future Following these steps can help you create a high-quality analog circuit layout. Best of luck with your work! #analog #analoglayout #layoutdesign
