FareShare utilise rescued food to develop nutritious, complete meals for vulnerable population groups, but found that with limited infrastructure, storing fresh and frozen food in remote areas was challenging. That’s why our Cooperative Research Centre is working with FareShare and the Department of Primary Industries (Queensland) to turn rescued food into nutritious, shelf-stable meals, using freeze-drying and retort technologies. This research is focused on ensuring meals stay nutrient-rich and culturally appropriate for remote communities - and early results are positive - and delicious! There's potential that this opportunity could rescue up to 150,000kg of food per year, while ensuring vulnerable communities receive great nutritional meals. In July 2024, Independent research revealed that only 6% of Australians* could recall seeing any information about household food waste. 🥦 Fast forward to today and thanks to The Great Unwaste campaign, nearly ¼ of the nation can recall seeing or hearing our campaign in action! 🍽️ Awareness is the first step in turning food waste around and we're so proud of the rapid impact we've made so far. We can't wait to keep building collaborative partnerships for even greater impact in 2025. As Australia's leading national partnership charity ending food waste across the supply chain, we value initiatives that connect food, people and their environment - and that's why we love Slow Food South Australia's ethos of respecting food through sustainability and tradition, what great way to uphold those values by reducing your food waste! 🍝 We recently had the pleasure of attending their event at the Waite Research Food Innovation Lab for Consolato d’Italia ad Adelaide's Week of Italian Cuisine in the World, where our CEO Dr Steve Lapidge spoke about how reducing food waste is a 'no brainer' and a simple way for Australia to reduce food insecurity, save money and the environment. Our Great Unwaste Campaign Director Mandy Hall shared how reducing food waste in your kitchen at home can help make a larger impact, and how Australians are motivated to get involved and reduce the whooping 7.7 million meals that are wasted each day! 🍽️ Thank you Slow Food South Australia and Consolato d’Italia ad Adelaide for this excellent event!
