Curtin University’s inaugural Global Sustainability Challenge 2024 brought together 32 students from across our six campuses to tackle real-world sustainability issues on Pulau Ubin, Singapore. Last month, over 100 high school students joined us for the Indigenous Futures High School Challenge—a three-day program exploring creativity, culture, and connection. From learning the art of journalism and building meaningful relationships to designing video games that envision an Indigenous future in the creative industries, the students showcased incredible talent and teamwork. Join students across Perth on Curtin's campus in Terms 1 and 2 next year for a free Korean language course for high school students in years 9 through 12. Students apply directly through the expression of interest. Expressions of interest close Tuesday, 25 February (with late applications accepted for consideration if spaces remain.)  This free course is an excellent opportunity for high school students keen to learn more about Korea and its dynamic culture. This is also a fantastic opportunity for students looking to enhance their pathway into a University degree.   This course is open to students who have never formally studied Korean before--students with limited Korean language ability with family links to Korea are also very welcome to sign up! Students will learn basic communication skills in Korean and participate in Korean cultural activities, ranging from cooking to learning more about K-pop. There are no formal exams or tests, and a certificate of participation is awarded by our Dean International and Dean Global, Korea to those who complete the course. 👩🏻🏫 I’m managing to squeeze in some research and L&T engagement before the year is out: part A is the 2nd Winter School on Migration Linguistics, with my talk (today) entitled “Word of Mouth: On itineraries & edibles — Lessons for contact, evolution & appropriation”. 🌏 In addition to the lectures by wonderful scholars/ teachers/ practitioners — Ariane Macalinga Borlongan, Nic L. Guinto, Vincent Ooi, Danica Salazar, Edgar W. Schneider, Aiden Yeh — our winter school will feature a walking ethnography on ‘Multilingual, Migrant Tokyo’. Curtin University is Hosting a Powerful Symposium on Art and Healing What role does art play in the aftermath of war? How do artists confront the trauma of conflict and reshape it into a vision of hope and resilience? Join us for Art of Peace: Art after War, a symposium hosted by Curtin University, that delves into these profound questions. 📅 1–2 February 2025 📍 Building 202, Room 122 Curtin University, Bentley This event brings together visual artists from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Rwanda, and Timor-Leste—three nations with unique post-conflict stories. They’ll explore how their art reflects survival, peacebuilding, and the human capacity for renewal. On December 6, 2024, we celebrated a significant milestone in our partnership with the University of Architecture of Ho Chi Minh City (UAH) by signing an Articulation Agreement that aligns UAH’s Degree of Architect with Curtin University’s Bachelor of Applied Science (Architectural Science). This agreement represents the culmination of nearly eight years of collaboration between Curtin School of Design and the Built Environment and UAH, focusing on student mobility initiatives. Since 2018, we have facilitated numerous outbound study tours and internships in Ho Chi Minh City, supported by the New Colombo Plan’s Mobility Program grants. Additionally, we welcomed UAH students to Curtin for an enriching study trip in June 2024. The signing ceremony featured key representatives from UAH, including Rector Dr. Lê Văn Thương, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture Dr. Phạm Phú Cường, and Director of the Institute of International Education Dr. Vũ Việt Anh. The agreement was executed by Dr. Lê Văn Thương and Prof Linley Lord, Associate DVC Global at Curtin University. This Articulation Agreement is a pivotal step forward in our partnership. We look forward to welcoming UAH Architecture students to Curtin and further strengthening the educational and cultural ties between Vietnam and Australia.
