We are saddened to share the news of the passing of Hon. Gary Nairn AO our Chair of the Advisory Board of the Centre for Spatial Data Infrastructure and Land Administration (CSDILA). We wish to express our deepest sympathies to his family and friends. Appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia, in 2015, Hon. Gary Nairn was a former Member of Parliament for Eden Monaro and a Special Minister for the John Howard Government, and importantly for us, he was a Licensed Surveyor. His exceptional contribution to the advancement of the surveying and geospatial information profession within Australia together with his voluntary commitment to social and community services is indeed worthy of recognition. Hon. Gary Nairn was a great friend of the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT) at the University of Melbourne as a member of the Infrastructure Engineering Advisory Group. Hon. Gary Nairn contributed to several significant and strategic activities of our IE Department and also supported our research strategy for many years. His advice was sought after by both private developers and Government agencies. Many of his contributions to The University of Melbourne and beyond have been made pro-bono, contributions that have been given enthusiastically with a strong commitment to fairness and professionalism. It is people like Hon. Gary Nairn that make Australia a fairer society and a better place to live for all Australians. This is a big loss for all of us, and our thoughts are with his family. He will be remembered for his dedication and service as one of the greatest leaders in our community.

The Centre for Spatial Data Infrastructures and Land Administration (CSDILA) conducted its second workshop for the ARC RIIS Research Hub project. The workshop saw active participation from industry partners, including Emerson, South East Water, Hawk, Rockfield, Spatial Vision, Woolpert (AAM), and Geoscape. During the workshop, the CSDILA research team delivered comprehensive updates on the substantial progress achieved across the three existing ARC research hub projects. The presentations have received significant appreciation from industry partners. This workshop also included the introduction of two new RIIS projects, expanding the scope of collaborative research activities. In discussion with our industry partners, we outlined new directions and the next steps for the RIIS projects. One key focus of the workshop was the strategic planning for the placement of Ph.D. candidates and post-doctoral researchers to further strengthen the collaboration between academia and industry for mutual benefit. #csdila #unimelb #workshop #riis #progress #collaboration
