About us

Derived from the local Wadawurrung Aboriginal name for the region, Djillong, which is understood to mean 'tongue of land'. Famous for our big city feel without the congestion, the stunning coast line, diverse night life and food culture, Geelong is a place for everyone. Located less than an hour from Melbourne, we are recognised as Victoria’s second city. Geelong is a lifestyle city with a picturesque waterfront, parks, gardens, beaches, great dining and plenty of shopping all within 20 minutes of each other. Getting around is simple with easy to navigate road networks and intelligent bus networks making for a highly accessible city. The region has a population of 225,000 residents who enjoy lifestyle options ranging from cosmopolitan inner-city, rural and semi-rural, to diverse suburban communities including many beachside townships. The Geelong region features some of the world's best surf beaches and is the entry point to the world famous Great Ocean Road. We are one of the largest local government areas in Victoria. We provide around 130 services to the municipality oversee a budget of $400M, and employ over 2,700 staff. We are a growing city, with an economy of 16,000 businesses, $1.3b in current major construction, and a labour force of over 101,000 in the key employment areas of health, manufacturing and education.   • Today, our CEO Ali Wastie joined other local employers and the Geelong Aboriginal Employment Taskforce to drive generational change for First Nations peoples in the Geelong region. The taskforce signed a statement committing to improving and increasing sustainable employment and career development outcomes for First Nations peoples by working collaboratively with all levels of government and businesses operating on Wadawurrung Country. The event took place at Johnstone Park, with a beautiful Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony by Wadawurrung Traditional Owner Corrina Eccles.

Highlights from the summit included insightful discussions on critical topics such as: 🏘️ The future of housing supply and affordability in the region, with a special focus on how planning reforms and infrastructure investment will drive sustainable growth. 🌱 The importance of environmental sustainability in development, and the role innovative solutions play in balancing growth with responsible land use. 🔑 Partnerships and collaboration between developers, local councils, and government bodies to ensure Geelong continues to thrive as a vibrant and inclusive city. 🏡 Panel discussions which included managers Margie McKay and Jacqueline Randles discussing the future of Geelong, the challenges and opportunities the City need to consider and working towards a common vision for a future In addition to the summit, our CEO's recent opinion piece was featured in the Geelong Advertiser 📰 which discussed the urgent need for bold action on housing supply and the role of the private sector in addressing the housing crisis. The piece emphasised the importance of streamlining planning processes and leveraging technological advancements to meet the growing demand for homes in the region.
