  • Celebrating the launch of Deception Bay’s new Housing Development. This week, we marked an important milestone with the sod turning for a groundbreaking housing project in Deception Bay, thanks to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Community Health Service Brisbane and the Queensland Government. As Moreton Bay’s population continues to age, we recognise the need for diverse and adaptable housing options. This development will deliver 75 new social housing units—comprising 53 one-bedroom and 22 two-bedroom homes—designed specifically for individuals over 55. What makes this project truly special is its focus on providing culturally sensitive, smaller homes that resonate with the needs and preferences of our older First Nations residents. These thoughtfully designed homes reflect our commitment to a fairer and more sustainable housing system, where everyone in our community has a place to call home. This initiative sets a precedent for inclusive and sustainable development, meeting not only the practical needs of our aging population but also respecting the cultural traditions of First Nations peoples. Thank you to everyone involved, in bringing this vision to life. Together, we’re building a stronger, more inclusive Moreton Bay. Mayor Peter Flannery Sandra Ruck

  • We’re proud to be awarded Q Shelter’s 2024 Kent Maddock memorial award for leadership in addressing housing and homelessness challenges at the local government level, and in conjunction with the sector. This recognition inspires us to continue working toward positive solutions, alongside our community partners. As the level of government closest to the people, we see first-hand the impact homelessness is having in our city. Although housing and homelessness are ultimately the responsibility of other levels of government, we can’t turn a blind eye and have stepped in to help people needing support. Homelessness has risen across City of Moreton Bay by 90% in the past decade. We’ve alleviated this pressure through initiatives like: ✅ Waiving fees for affordable housing in 15 suburbs ✅ Leasing Council land to community housing providers ✅ Committing $3.7m to the new Peninsula Support Hub ✅ Supporting the Redcliffe Sleepbus Thank you to Q Shelter, our local community groups and the many volunteers for their ongoing hard work to help make a difference across City of Moreton Bay.

  • The RACQ Future Brisbane survey reveals that upgrading the Bruce Highway is a top priority for Queenslanders, with 85.1% of respondents highlighting its importance as a legacy project for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. 📊 We have been vocal in calling for urgent action, with Mayor Peter Flannery urging the State Government to fast-track the Bruce Highway Western Alternative to free up the Bruce Highway. “The Bruce Highway is a car park most mornings and afternoons,” Mayor Flannery said. “City of Moreton Bay is one of the fastest-growing Local Government Areas in the country, with over 500,000 residents and set to grow to over 1 million within the next 30 years. A Bruce Highway Western Alternative would get thousands of Moreton Bay locals off the Bruce so it can be used for what it’s designed to be – a national highway.” From improving safety to reducing congestion and flood impacts, Queenslanders want real, long-lasting transport legacies from the 2032 Games. • Our vision for a new ferry service to be operational in time for 2032 will ease congestion on the Bruce Highway, reduce travel time to Brisbane and provide a unique tourism opportunity opening up the underutilised Bay. “It’s not only needed now for communities and tourism opportunities… but also, as we move towards the Olympics and Paralympics, it’s critical and catalytic infrastructure that can be delivered for a once in a lifetime opportunity.” Mayor Peter Flannery For more information, visit: https://lnkd.in/g4Uj5Vqc

Water taxis linking Brisbane’s riverside precincts, new overwater helipads, and ferries direct from the central business district to Redcliffe and Bribie Island are all on the list as leaders consider how to boost the city’s global tourism standing in the lead-up to the 2032 Games. River-based businesses are also working to establish more inner-city moorings to harness the tourism potential of the southeast’s signature “superpower” over the next few years. Brisbane City Council has identified 21 locations for potential river activation opportunities, while the City of Moreton Bay continues to push for a new fast ferry service.
