Regenerating Australia: Independent Review Confirms Positive Progress in HIR Projects 🌏 CMI welcomes the release of the latest independent review of Human Induced Regeneration (HIR) project gateway checks in the #ACCUScheme. The review was completed by Honorary Associate Professor Cris Brack, a forestry expert from the ANU, for the Clean Energy Regulator, which oversees the ACCU Scheme. The report found that the 33 reviewed projects are being managed appropriately and that regeneration toward forest cover is occurring. CMI welcomes scrutiny to ensure that the ACCU Scheme remains high integrity, supporting best practice and providing investor certainty. 💡 Key findings from the review include that: → National-scale sequestration models are unfortunately unreliable as a sole data-source for measuring tree-cover on their own in substantial parts of the country, especially WA. → In locations where the national-scale models suggested a lack of regeneration or stagnation of growth, studies of a time-series of remotely sensed images found evidence of positive regeneration trends in about 75% of cases in Queensland; 50% in NSW; and 85% in Western Australia. → Independent auditors and ecologists have conducted over 200 field measurements, confirming that the project classifications provided by the proponents are more accurate than national scale models. They also found that the strata boundaries being used are dependable. → As a result of the required 5-year gateway checks some projects were re-stratified. Around 6.5% or around 1900 ha of Carbon Estimation Areas (CEAs) were removed due to not having achieved minimum canopy cover, or from improved mapping identifying the area as ineligible. The report found that this demonstrates good practice and should be expected given the differences in nature of original CEAs.
