Broken to Brilliant at the 2024 Stop Domestic Violence Conference! Today, we attended an insightful session by Our Watch, which showcased their groundbreaking work in putting men at the center of efforts to address Domestic and Family Violence. They unveiled several key resources: * Men in Focus Practice Guide * Men in Focus Evidence Review * Men in Focus National Consultation Report: Strengthening national approaches to addressing masculinities and working with men and boys to prevent gender-based violence. Additionally, Our Watch has launched 14 videos, 3 infographics, and 8 practitioner support guides to further support this important work. We’re learning so much to enhance our programs and services and are inspired by the collaborative efforts to create real, lasting change. Together, we’re building safer, stronger communities. #SDV24 #SDVC24 #BrokenToBrilliant #MenInFocus #OurWatch

Today is Economic Abuse Awareness Day 🟡, and Broken to Brilliant is attending the #StopDomesticViolenceConference (#SDVC24). This afternoon, we heard from the Commonwealth Bank about their mission to stop financial abuse. In partnership with Good Shepherd, CommBank has funded the Financial Independence Hub, a service offering open access support regardless of where you bank. CommBank has also launched the 'Talk' financial abuse campaign, featuring popular media personalities Tanya Hennessy, Clare Bowditch, Jamila Rizvi, and Rosie Waterland. This campaign helps start the conversation about financial abuse, teaching us how to TALK: Trust your instincts – If you notice red flags, don’t ignore them. Ask openly and gently – Follow up on signs of distress or changes in behaviour. Listen actively – Let them share their story in their own words. Know the support available – Direct them to the help they need. Congratulations to the Commonwealth Bank for their ongoing leadership in tackling financial abuse and to Strong Women Talking for being selected as a New Chapter Innovation Hub partner. Broken to Brilliant also extends gratitude to the Commonwealth Bank Staff Foundation Grant for supporting the creation of our 5th book! More exciting details coming soon. #EconomicAbuseAwarenessDay #FinancialAbuse #TalkCampaign #DomesticViolenceAwareness #FinancialIndependence #Empowerment #GoodShepherd #BrokenToBrilliant #CommBank #StrongWomenTalking #SurvivorStories #InnovationHub #sdv24 #FinancialSuperwomen #fsw Karen Lindsay

At the 2024 Stop Domestic Violence Conference we attended a session on Understanding and Responding to Vicarious Trauma and Building Workplace Solutions Presented by Tara Hunter, Full Stop Australia This insightful session highlighted the critical issues of vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, and burnout. These challenges often affect those working in the domestic and family violence and sexual assault fields. Vicarious trauma impacts the whole person: *Body: Feeling constantly on edge. *Behavior: Withdrawing from others. *Mood: Losing interest in previously enjoyed activities. *Thoughts: Increased negative or intrusive thoughts. To mitigate these effects, it's crucial to foster safe psychosocial workspaces that provide support and prioritize self-care. Self-care strategies include: *Health and fitness. *Financial well-being. *Spiritual and cultural connection. *Support from friends, family, and community. *Nurturing love and intimacy. *Creating balance in work life. At Broken to Brilliant, we understand these challenges firsthand. As survivors supporting fellow survivors, this session was a valuable reminder of the essential structures and practices needed to sustain and empower those working in this field and paying it forward. #sdvc24 #BrokenToBrilliant #DomesticViolenceSurvivors #DomesticViolenceAwareness Australian and New Zealand Mental Health Association Inc. #sdvc24 #sdv24

Today, at Bracken Ridge Scout Hall, Broken to Brilliant held its second last free Financial Superwomen Workshop for 2024. This program was founded by Karen Lindsay Breaking free from an abusive situation is a courageous first step, but it often brings significant financial hurdles. Many survivors face the complexities of managing finances including concerns and lack of knowledge about budgeting, banking, renting, or navigating the journey to homeownership. Today's workshop provided valuable insights to help survivors demystify these challenges, including Mind Coaching, insurance, writing a will and preparing an enduring power of attorney documents. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our volunteer financial experts, whose dedication and expertise made these sessions incredibly impactful, empowering women to take control of their financial futures. A special thank you to Domino’s Pizza Bracken Ridge for sponsoring our lunch through the Feed The Knead Program. Your support made the day even more enjoyable and we ate all that pizza!
