Australia’s two largest iron ore miners BHP and Rio Tinto, along with BlueScope, have selected the Kwinana Industrial Area, south of Perth Western Australia as the location to develop Australia’s largest ironmaking electric smelting furnace (ESF) pilot plant—Project NeoSmelt. The NeoSmelt parties also announced that Woodside Energy will join the consortium as an equal equity participant and energy supplier, subject to finalising commercial arrangements. The pilot plant will initially use natural gas to reduce iron ore to direct reduced iron (DRI), but once operational, the project aims to use lower-carbon emissions hydrogen to reduce iron ore. If successful, NeoSmelt has the potential to open a pathway to near-zero emissions steelmaking using Pilbara iron ore and ensure the longevity of Australia's iron ore industry. Watch a video below with details of the announcement from Tania Archibald (Chief Executive, Australian Steel Products), made at a press conference today on-site in Kwinana. CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, has successfully trialled its game-changing hydrogen production technology at our Port Kembla Steelworks in New South Wales, demonstrating that affordable, renewable hydrogen can be generated at scale to help decarbonise heavy industry. Our hydrogen trial steels the spotlight. 💡 We're thrilled to announce our game-changing hydrogen production technology trial at BlueScope’s Port Kembla Steelworks in New South Wales has been a success! The trial demonstrates that affordable and renewable hydrogen can be generated at scale to help decarbonise heavy industry. Our tubular solid oxide electrolysis (SOE) technology has clocked 1000 hours of successful operation in the trial with BlueScope Steel, which commenced in October this year. Unlike conventional hydrogen electrolysers, which rely heavily on electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, our advanced SOE technology uses both waste heat (for example, steam from the steelworks) and electricity to produce hydrogen with greater efficiency. In line with our First Nations Framework in Australia and our commitment to local communities as outlined in 'Our Bond', we were delighted to support two recent events in Wollongong, NSW: the Illawarra Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Procurement Networking Panel at Inside Industry PK and the second annual Business Expo at Wollongong Town Hall. Below, you can watch a wrap-up video featuring testimonials and footage from both functions. The Illawarra Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Business Expo, a joint initiative by Wollongong City Council and Illawarra Indigenous Business Network (IIBN), was launched in 2023 and is a part of Indigenous Business Month, which is celebrated annually in October. Over 40 local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses participated in a showcase of diverse products and services—from cultural artefacts to construction companies—highlighting the vibrant, entrepreneurial spirit within the community. The Procurement Networking Panel included speakers from government, the corporate sector and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses, emphasising the importance of integrating such organisations into supply chains. Both events provided networking opportunities and fostered collaboration and support. We thank the following people who spoke on camera (in order of appearance): Nyssa Murray (Manager First Nations, BlueScope); Greg Doyle (General Manager, Wollongong City Council); Councillor Tania Brown (Lord Mayor of the City of Wollongong); Errolyn Strang (Founder and Director, Culture Across Time Pty Ltd); Brett Rodwell (Business Development Manager, KJ SCAFFOLDING); Carly Pascoe (Community Development Officer, Wollongong City Council) and Uncle Richard Davis (Dharawal Elder and Chairperson, Illawarra Aboriginal Corporation), who gave the official Welcome to Country. Congratulations to Wollongong City Council and the connected organising committee on two fantastic events, including Carly, Nyssa and Uncle Richard above, along with (in alphabetical order): Amber Waldron (Manager Community and Government Relations, BlueScope); Scott Morgan (Aboriginal Partnerships Manager, NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development); and Tina McGhie (Co-CEO and Consultant at Curijo Pty Ltd). Last, we thank the two further procurement panellists, Catherine Wright (CMJ Food Services) and Christina Snaidero (Procurement Specialist - Outsourced Business Processes, BlueScope), along with all of the wonderful Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander business stallholders who participated. 👥 Discover participating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses on the Wollongong City Council website: https://bit.ly/3Zff95q 📄 Read our 'BlueScope Australia First Nations Framework' document: https://bit.ly/3CClbnX #Aboriginal #TorresStraitIslander #FirstNations #Wollongong #business #procurement #networking #community #BlueScope #CreatingStrength
