Today we launched our report, "Cruel Summers", looking at renters' experiences of the last summer. We found that rental homes were letting renters down, with indoor temperatures routinely outside the recommended temperatures for a healthy home. This drove up power bills, and also harmed sleep quality, and physical and mental health. Key Findings: ➡ In New South Wales, renters dealt with median indoor temperatures of 25.2°C, with high humidity levels adding to the discomfort. ➡ Queensland saw the highest median temperature at 28.2°C, often resulting in indoor conditions that were hotter than outside. ➡ A staggering indoor temperature of 45.3°C was recorded in South Australia, illustrating the severe risks posed by substandard housing. This summer's extreme conditions, alongside rising living costs and a tight rental market, highlight the critical need for action. All state and territory governments need to step up and introduce minimum energy performance standards for rental homes and an expansion of renters' rights, including the elimination of no-cause evictions. It's time to push for changes that ensure all renters have access to homes that are not just shelters, but safe, comfortable, and sustainable spaces.
