What’s more fun than a little bit of capability rivalry? Picture this: the Business Analysis and Change Management teams facing off over lunch for some good-natured sparring. The ultimate question? Are we very similar or distinctly different? The gloves (metaphorical, of course) came off as we debated the big questions: * Is one of us more process than people focused? * Is one group Excel vs PowerPoint obsessed? Artefacts vs Impact orientated? Design vs Adoption driven? After an hour of spirited back-and-forth (and maybe a few questionable impersonations), we came to a shocking realisation: we’re cut from the same cloth. At the heart of it, we’re both focused on helping businesses deliver meaningful value - ensuring solutions are what they need, not just what they asked for. Turns out, we’re not rivals at all. We’re besties with complementary superpowers, ready to lean on and support each other for maximum impact. And don’t worry, there are no real surprises here - we always knew this. But heck it was fun to spend an hour ribbing each other! Sometimes, a little friendly rivalry is just what the team needs to remind us of what makes us great: the brilliant way in which we come together to collaborate and Explore Possible. #BusinessAnalysis, #ChangeManagement, #CapabilityRivalry, #WorkplaceFun, #BetterTogether, #CollaborationOverCompetition

What the, is FinOps? If you’re using a smartphone or online service, you’re already familiar with the Software as a Service model - it’s part of our everyday lives now. Remember when all IT infrastructure was in-house, crammed into hot, server-packed rooms? Moving to the cloud has changed that dramatically. For companies with cloud-based infrastructure, the idea is simple: access a pooled resource and pay only for what you need, when you need it. But here’s the question - are you really getting the best value out of these cloud services? Are you actively managing your cloud costs or just using them? FinOps brings a structured approach to managing cloud spending. Think of it like moving house: when you plan a move, you compare options - removalists, mobile storage, trailers - based on budget and needs. FinOps applies this same mindset to your cloud setup, helping you evaluate actual usage so you only pay for what’s necessary, saving money and reducing waste. With a cloud-based product, you’re typically paying a unit-bound fee (time, frequency, memory). Along with the service, most cloud providers offer free tools to help you assess whether you’re fully using what you’re paying for - but you first need to know they’re available, and second, you need to understand how to use them. Just like any other element of your business operations, cloud infrastructure and service should be regularly reviewed for improvement opportunities. FinOps doesn’t just focus on cost though - it also uncovers inefficiencies within your digital infrastructure. Many of us have had the experience overpaying for services that we no longer need or are using to their full potential (online fitness program subscriptions anyone?). Identifying and addressing these inefficiencies not only boosts your bottom line but also benefits the environment. Our principal consultant, Wolfgang Marx is a tiny bit obsessed with this whole area and loves to chat about this topic. If you’re already on the FinOps path or just curious, he’d love to geek out with you. How can we grow if we never challenge ourselves? Many of us have spent years building expertise in our fields, but true growth often comes from stepping outside that comfort zone. Are we really experts if we don’t pause to listen, learn, and hear fresh perspectives - from those in our chosen field, or even those in a different industry or profession to us? Sometimes, the best insights come from looking beyond what we know. At Bailey Abbott, we’re passionate advocates for professional development. Yes, it’s a familiar topic - but for good reason. Reflecting on our recent attendance at the 2024 IIBA SoftEd Festival of Business Analysis (#FoBA), we’re reminded why conferences and learning events matter, even with the costs involved. For small businesses, sending people to professional events can mean covering tickets, travel, and managing workloads. So why do we invest? Here’s a thought (plus an insight!) from our Capability Lead, Business Analysis, Evan Klose, who attended #FoBA this year:
