If you thought 2024 was a big year for the Gold Coast, buckle up for 2025. Here's my Wish List for 2025: Advanced Resource Recovery Centre (ARRC): This remains a top priority. In 12 years, our city’s landfills will be full, and our population will hit one million. The ARRC offers a sustainable solution to waste management by generating clean energy while minimising landfill impact. We're pushing for value-for-money in this $1.6 billion project and advocating for state and federal support to tackle this crucial issue. Transport: While we love our cars, we must rethink our transport. The light rail is a vital part of our future, with 85 million passengers so far. We must complete its final stage and expand public transport with rapid east-west bus connections, better active travel choices, and ferry services. We’re investing $449 million this year in transport infrastructure. Green Space: We've added 178 hectares of green space for wildlife and community enjoyment in the last four years. Our latest project, Greenheart, will turn 260 hectares of land between Merrimac and Robina into a park, providing more sporting fields, nature walks, event spaces, and playgrounds. I’m lobbying for state and federal support for this $300 million initiative. Lyric Theatre: HOTA has become our cultural hub. The final piece of the puzzle is a 1600-seat lyric theatre, which will cement our cultural identity. We’re working on cost estimates and hope for state and federal support once the design is finalised. Events: We are an events city, with $148 million invested annually to support businesses and over 600 local events each year. We’re pursuing additional major events for 2025, which will further boost our economy. Film Industry Expansion: Council is supporting Shadowbox Studios to build a $195 million film production facility in Yatala, which will create up to 10 sound stages and generate $195 million annually for the economy once complete. Gold Coast Arena: We’ve heard from promoters about the need for a stadium capable of hosting international events like boxing, basketball, and live music. A 12,000–18,000 seat stadium is in the works at Carey Park in Southport Nature Tourism: We are investing in sustainable nature-based tourism projects across the Gold Coast, including the expansion of eco-camps and experiences. These initiatives will preserve our natural beauty while promoting responsible tourism. Planning Certainty: With our population booming, we need a updated Planning Scheme that provides certainty, allowing for more affordable housing and jobs in key areas, particularly along public transport corridors. Games Review: We are pushing for a fiscally responsible approach to the Brisbane 2032 Olympics, advocating for regional venues and focusing on lasting legacies like transport.
